Abstract

A nasal prong ( 230 ) for sealing with a nasal passage of a patient includes a head portion ( 235 ) structured to seal and/or sealingly communicate with the patient's nasal passage and a column or stalk structured to interconnect the head portion with a base. The head portion ( 235 ) is configured to direct gas in use away from the septum and/or posteriorly relative to the nasal passage.

Claims (50)

1. A mask system for delivery of a flow of pressurized, breathable gas to a patient to treat Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB), the mask system comprising:

a frame;

headgear attached to the frame;

a nasal pillows assembly including a base and a pair of nasal pillows extending from the base, the base being attached to the frame, and each of the nasal pillows further comprising:

a head portion configured to contact the patient's nose around a corresponding one of the patient's nares, the head portion having an orifice configured to direct the flow of pressurized, breathable gas into the corresponding naris; and

a stalk connecting the head portion to the base,

wherein the frame and/or the base further comprise at least one vent opening configured to wash out carbon dioxide,

wherein each stalk extends from the base in a medial direction and towards the patient's sagittal plane in use,

wherein each head portion extends from the corresponding stalk in a medial direction and towards the patient's sagittal plane in use, and

wherein the orifice is oriented on the head portion such that, in use, the head portion redirects the flow of pressurized, breathable gas, as the flow of pressurized, breathable gas exits the orifice, in a lateral direction away from the patient's septum.

2. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein each of the nasal pillows are structured to increase turbulence in the flow of pressurized, breathable gas within the patient's corresponding nasal passage.

3. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein each of the nasal pillows are structured to redirect the flow of pressurized, breathable gas upon entering the patient's corresponding nasal passage, diffuse the flow of pressurized, breathable gas within the patient's corresponding nasal passage, and/or orient the orifice relative to the flow of pressurized, breathable gas to reduce and/or eliminate air jetting effects within the patient's corresponding nasal passage.

4. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein each orifice is formed such that a portion of each head portion that bounds the orifice is parallel to a common plane.

5. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the frame is substantially rigid and the nasal pillows assembly is removably attached to the frame.

6. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the nasal pillows assembly is integrally formed from one piece of silicone.

7. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the head portion has a maximum diameter that is greater than a maximum diameter of the stalk.

8. The mask system of claim 7 , wherein each head portion decreases in diameter from the maximum diameter to a portion of the head portion that bounds the orifice.

9. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein each head portion further comprises a hood structured to further direct the flow of pressurized, breathable gas away from the patient's septum.

10. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the orifice is oriented on each head portion so as to, in use, direct the flow of pressurized, breathable gas into the patient's corresponding nasal passage in a direction that is more posterior relative to the patient than a longitudinal axis of the stalk.

11. The mask system of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the nasal pillows are structured to increase turbulence in the flow of pressurized, breathable gas within the patient's corresponding nasal passage,

the frame is substantially rigid and the nasal pillows assembly is removably attached to the frame,

the nasal pillows assembly is integrally formed from one piece of silicone,

the head portion has a maximum diameter that is greater than a maximum diameter of the stalk, and

each head portion decreases in diameter from the maximum diameter to a portion of the head portion that bounds the orifice.

12. A mask system for delivery of a flow of pressurized, breathable gas to a patient to treat Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB), the mask system comprising:

a frame;

headgear attached to the frame;

a nasal pillows assembly including a base and a pair of nasal pillows extending from the base, the base being attached to the frame, and each of the nasal pillows further comprising:

a head portion configured to contact the patient's nose around a corresponding one of the patient's nares, the head portion having an orifice configured to direct the flow of pressurized, breathable gas into the corresponding naris; and

a stalk connecting the head portion to the base,

wherein the frame and/or the base further comprise at least one vent opening configured to wash out carbon dioxide,

wherein each stalk extends from the base in a medial direction and towards the patient's sagittal plane in use,

wherein each head portion extends from the corresponding stalk in a medial direction and towards the patient's sagittal plane in use, and

wherein, in use, the stalk is configured to direct the flow of pressurized, breathable gas in a first direction and the head portion is configured to direct the flow of pressurized, breathable gas into the patient's corresponding nasal passage in a second direction, as the flow of pressurized, breathable gas exits the orifice, that is lateral relative to the patient's sagittal plane, the first direction and the second direction being different.

13. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein each of the nasal pillows are structured to increase turbulence in the flow of pressurized, breathable gas within the patient's corresponding nasal passage.

14. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein each of the nasal pillows are structured to redirect the flow of pressurized, breathable gas upon entering the patient's corresponding nasal passage, diffuse the flow of pressurized, breathable gas within the patient's corresponding nasal passage, and/or orient the orifice relative to the flow of pressurized, breathable gas to reduce and/or eliminate air jetting effects within the patient's corresponding nasal passage.

15. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein each orifice is formed such that a portion of each head portion that bounds the orifice is parallel to a common plane.

16. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein the frame is substantially rigid and the nasal pillows assembly is removably attached to the frame.

17. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein the nasal pillows assembly is integrally formed from one piece of silicone.

18. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein the head portion has a maximum diameter that is greater than a maximum diameter of the stalk.

19. The mask system of claim 18 , wherein each head portion decreases in diameter from the maximum diameter to a portion of the head portion that bounds the orifice.

20. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein each head portion further comprises a hood structured to further direct the flow of pressurized, breathable gas in the direction that is lateral relative to the patient's sagittal plane.

21. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein the orifice is oriented on each head portion so as to, in use, direct the flow of pressurized, breathable gas into the patient's corresponding nasal passage in a direction that is more posterior relative to the patient than a longitudinal axis of the stalk.

22. The mask system of claim 12 , wherein:

each of the nasal pillows are structured to increase turbulence in the flow of pressurized, breathable gas within the patient's corresponding nasal passage,

the frame is substantially rigid and the nasal pillows assembly is removably attached to the frame,

the nasal pillows assembly is integrally formed from one piece of silicone,

the head portion has a maximum diameter that is greater than a maximum diameter of the stalk, and

each head portion decreases in diameter from the maximum diameter to a portion of the head portion that bounds the orifice.
