Abstract

A powered rotary knife includes a handle, a blade housing, an annular blade, and a blade bushing for rotatably mounting the blade within the housing. The blade housing includes an inner groove that is operable to receive the blade bushing therein. The blade housing and blade bushing are split in order to expand and receive the blade. The blade includes an outer groove that is also operable to receive the blade bushing. Thus, the blade bushing is spaced between the blade housing and blade and rotatably secures the blade within the blade housing.

Claims (36)

1. A method of installing an annular blade on a blade housing of a rotary knife, said method comprising the steps of:

(a) placing a bushing within the blade housing; and

(b) positioning the blade in operable engagement with the bushing such that the bushing serves to support the blade on the blade housing for rotation about an axis,

step (a) including the step of locating a radially projecting stop surface of the bushing adjacent a radially projecting stop structure of the blade housing, with interengagement between the stop surface and stop structure restricting the bushing from rotating relative to the blade housing.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 ,

said bushing presenting bushing ends which define respective stop surfaces, and said blade housing presenting housing ends which define respective stop structures,

said locating step including the step of situating the bushing ends adjacent the housing ends.

3. The method as claimed in claim 2 ,

said bushing ends defining a circumferential bushing gap therebetween, and said housing ends defining a circumferential housing gap therebetween,

step (a) including the step of positioning the bushing so that the bushing gap at least partly overlaps the housing gap.

4. The method as claimed in claim 2 ,

(c) prior to step (b), elastically deforming the bushing and blade housing in a radially outward direction.

5. The method as claimed in claim 2 ,

step (b) being performed after step (a).

6. The method as claimed in claim 2 ,

step (a) including the step of inserting the bushing into a housing groove presented by the blade housing.

7. The method as claimed in claim 6 ,

step (b) including the step of inserting the split bushing into a blade groove presented by the blade.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7 ,

step (b) including the step of positioning the blade within the blade housing, with the blade groove and the housing groove being in a generally opposed relationship relative to one another.

9. The method as claimed in claim 2 ,

step (b) including the step of inserting the split bushing into a blade groove presented by the blade.

10. The method as claimed in claim 2 ,

step (b) including the step of positioning the blade within the blade housing.

11. The method as claimed in claim 1 ,

step (b) being performed after step (a).

12. The method as claimed in claim 1 ,

step (a) including the step of inserting the bushing into a housing groove presented by the blade housing.

13. The method as claimed in claim 12 ,

step (b) including the step of inserting the split bushing into a blade groove presented by the blade.

14. The method as claimed in claim 13 ,

step (b) including the step of positioning the blade within the blade housing, with the blade groove and the housing groove being in a generally opposed relationship relative to one another.

15. The method as claimed in claim 1 ,

step (b) including the step of inserting the split bushing into a blade groove presented by the blade.

16. The method as claimed in claim 1 ,

step (b) including the step of positioning the blade within the blade housing.
