Abstract

A trans mucosal neuromuscular electrical stimulation device ( 1 ) including a mouthpiece ( 3, 103 ), electrodes ( 32 a, 33 a, 132 a, 133 a ) associated with the mouthpiece ( 3, 103 ). The device ( 1 ) and/or mouthpiece ( 3, 103 ) incorporates electrical circuitry operatively connecting to the electrodes ( 32 a, 33 a, 132 a, 133 a ) to a power source and is configured to provide, in use, electrical stimulation to one or more palate and/or tongue muscles via the electrodes ( 32 a, 33 a, 132 a, 133 a ) through the oral mucosa. The treatment regime, including the location of stimulation and the parameters used, is designed to increase resting muscle tone and/or muscle tone during sleep.

Claims (20)

1. An electrical stimulation training device for training one or more oral muscles during an awake state of the user, the device comprising a mouthpiece, at least one electrode associated with the mouthpiece and electrical circuitry operatively connected to the electrode, wherein the device is configured to provide, in use, via the at least one electrode, a first electric current and a second electric current, the first electric current being different than the second electric current, each of the first and second electric currents having a frequency of up to 150 Hz.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the current comprises a frequency of between 10 and 140 Hz.

3. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the current comprises a frequency of between 20 and 50 Hz.

4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the first current comprises a frequency of between 20 and 50 Hz and the second current comprises a frequency between 50 and 120 Hz.

5. The device according to claim 1 , further comprising a handle to which the mouthpiece is mounted to enable the mouthpiece to be inserted or held, in use, within one or more locations or positions or orientations within the mouth.

6. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the mouthpiece is free of a mounting retainer for securing it to the mouth of a user.

7. The device according to claim 1 , further comprising a controller programmed or programmable to control one or more features of the electrical stimulation according to a predetermined treatment regime.

8. An electrical stimulation training device for training one or more oral muscles during an awake state of the user, the device comprising a mouthpiece, at least one electrode associated with the mouthpiece and electrical circuitry operatively connected to the electrode, wherein the device is configured to provide, in use, via the at least one electrode, a first electric current and a second electric current, the first electric current being different than the second electric current, each of the first and second electric currents having a frequency of up to 150 Hz and wherein the device is free of a mounting retainer for securing it in the mouth of the user.

9. The device according to claim 8 , wherein the mouthpiece comprises a pair of arms extending away from each other, each arm having a flange extending away from the respective arm and to bear against a dorsal surface of the tongue when installed, each flange being provided with said at least one electrode.

10. A method for use in an awake state for training one or more oral muscles, the method comprising whilst the user is in an awake state locating a mouthpiece in the users mouth and providing or applying a first electric current and a second electric current, the first electric current being different than the second electric current, each of the first and second electrical currents having a frequency of up to 150 Hz to one or more oral muscles from an at least one electrode associated with the mouthpiece to increase resting muscle tone and/or muscle tone during sleep.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the current comprises a frequency of between 20 and 50 Hz.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the current comprises a frequency of between 50 and 120 Hz.

13. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the first current comprises a frequency of between 20 and 50 Hz and the second current comprises a frequency of between 50 and 120 Hz.

14. The method according to claim 10 , comprising providing or applying the first current and the second current simultaneously, concurrently or in succession.

15. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the current is applied for a predetermined period of up to 5 hours.

16. The method according to claim 10 , comprising providing or applying an electric current for a first predetermined period to a dorsal surface of the tongue.

17. The method according to claim 10 , comprising providing the current during a first treatment period to build resting muscle tone and/or muscle tone during sleep, and a providing a second current during a second maintenance period during which one or more features of the current is adjusted or changed with respect to the first period.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the treatment period is 1 to 12 weeks and during the treatment period the current is applied daily for a time period of from 1 minute to 5 hours.

19. The device according to claim 1 , configured to apply the first and second currents for a first predetermined period of time.

20. The device according to claim 19 , configured to apply the first and second currents for a second predetermined period of time.
