Abstract

Described herein are embodiments of stationary exercise machines having reciprocating foot and/or hand members, such as foot pedals that move in a closed loop path. Some embodiments can include reciprocating foot pedals that cause a user's feet to move along a closed loop path that is substantially inclined, such that the foot motion simulates a climbing motion more than a flat walking or running motion. Some embodiments can further include reciprocating handles that are configured to move in coordination with the foot via a linkage to a crank wheel also coupled to the foot pedals. Variable resistance can be provided via a rotating air-resistance based mechanism, via a magnetism based mechanism, and/or via other mechanisms, one or more of which can be rapidly adjustable while the user is using the machine.

Claims (29)

1. A stationary exercise machine, comprising:

a frame;

a first crank arm, wherein a first end of the first crank arm is fixedly coupled with a first end portion of the drive mechanism that is axially aligned with the crank axis, and a second crank arm, wherein a first end of the second crank arm is fixedly coupled with a second end portion of the drive mechanism that is axially aligned with the crank axis;

a first foot link rotatably coupled with a second end of the first crank arm opposite the first end of the first crank arm to rotate the first crank arm and the drive mechanism about the crank axis, and a second foot link rotatably coupled with a second end of the second crank arm opposite the first end of the second crank arm to rotate the second crank arm and the drive mechanism about the crank axis; and

a first handle link rotatably coupled with the drive mechanism and rotatable about a first rotation axis that is parallel to and offset from the crank axis along a first direction angled to a longitudinal direction of the first crank arm, and a second handle link rotatably coupled with the drive mechanism and rotatable about a second rotation axis that is parallel to and offset from the crank axis along a second direction angled to a longitudinal direction of the second crank arm.

2. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first handle link is coupled to the drive mechanism between the first end portion and the second end portion of the drive mechanism, and the second handle link is coupled to the drive mechanism between the first end portion and the second end portion of the drive mechanism.

3. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first rotation axis and the second rotation axis each travel around the crank axis in a circular path during rotation of the drive mechanism.

4. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 1 , wherein the length of the first crank arm is greater than the offset of the first rotation axis from the crank axis, and the length of the second crank arm is greater than the offset of the second rotation axis from the crank axis.

5. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 1 , wherein the drive mechanism includes a central portion, a first offset portion located between the central portion and the first end portion, and a second offset portion located between the central portion and the second end portion.

6. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 5 , wherein the central portion, the first end portion, and the second end portion are axially aligned along the crank axis.

7. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 5 , wherein the first offset portion and the second offset portion are positioned on opposite sides of the crank axis.

8. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 5 , wherein the first offset portion includes a first shaft aligned with the first rotation axis, and the second offset portion includes a second shaft aligned with the second rotation axis.

9. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first shaft and the second shaft each travel around the crank axis in a circular path during rotation of the drive mechanism.

10. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first offset portion includes a first pair of spaced-apart plates extending away from the crank axis and the first shaft extends between the first pair of spaced-apart plates, and the second offset portion includes a second pair of spaced-apart plates extending away from the crank axis and the second shaft extends between the second pair of spaced-apart plates.

11. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 10 , wherein a first angle defined between the first crank arm and the first pair of spaced-apart plates is constant during rotation of the drive mechanism, and a second angle defined between the second crank arm and the second pair of spaced-apart plates is constant during rotation of the drive mechanism.

12. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 11 , wherein the first angle is between approximately 60 degrees and approximately 90 degrees, and the second angle is between approximately 60 degrees and approximately 90 degrees.

13. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 11 , wherein the first angle is approximately 75 degrees, and the second angle is approximately 75 degrees.

14. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first handle link is rotatably coupled to the first shaft, and the second handle link is rotatably coupled to the second shaft.

15. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first foot link comprises a first reciprocating foot member including a forward end portion rotatably coupled with a distal end portion of the first crank arm, and the second foot link comprises a second reciprocating foot member including a forward end portion rotatably coupled with a distal end portion of the second crank arm.

16. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 15 , further comprising a first foot pedal coupled with the first reciprocating foot member, and a second foot pedal coupled with the second reciprocating foot member.

17. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first handle link comprises a first reciprocating handle member including a lower end portion rotatably coupled with the drive mechanism and rotatable about the first rotation axis, and the second handle link comprises a second reciprocating handle member including a lower end portion rotatably coupled with the drive mechanism and rotatable about the second rotation axis.

19. The stationary exercise machine as defined in claim 18 , wherein the first handle and the second handle are rotatable about a handle axis defined by the frame.

20. A method of exercising on a stationary exercise machine, comprising:

moving a first foot link pivotally coupled to a distal end of a first crank arm to apply a force to the distal end of the first crank arm, wherein a proximal end of the first crank arm is fixedly coupled with the drive mechanism at a crank axis such that the force applied to the distal end of the first crank arm via the first foot link causes the first crank arm to rotate the drive mechanism about the crank axis;

moving a second foot link pivotally coupled to a distal end of a second crank arm to apply a force to the distal end of the second crank arm, wherein a proximal end of the second crank arm is fixedly coupled with the drive mechanism at the crank axis such that the force applied to the distal end of the second crank arm via the second foot link causes the second crank arm to rotate the drive mechanism about the crank axis;
