Abstract

Example systems and techniques for denervation, for example, renal denervation. In some examples, a processor determines one or more tissue characteristics of tissue proximate a target nerve and a blood vessel. The processor may generate, based on the one or more tissue characteristics, an estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy delivered by a therapy delivery device disposed within the blood vessel. The processor may generate a graphical user interface including a graphical representation of the tissue proximate the target nerve and the blood vessel and a graphical representation of the estimated volume of influence.

Claims (44)

1. A method comprising:

determining, by a processor, one or more tissue characteristics of tissue proximate a target nerve and a blood vessel of a patient;

determining, by the processor an estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy to be delivered by a therapy delivery device disposed within the blood vessel based on the one or more tissue characteristics and characteristics of the therapy delivery device;

rendering, by the processor on a graphical user interface, a graphical representation of the tissue proximate the target nerve and the estimated volume of influence; and

determining, by the processor, one or more therapy parameter values for denervation therapy delivery based on the estimated volume of influence.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the estimated volume of influence comprises a lesion.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the estimated volume of influence of the denervation therapy comprises a first estimated volume of influence of a first denervation therapy to be delivered by the therapy delivery device according to a first therapy program, the method further comprising:

determining, by the processor, a second estimated volume of influence of a second denervation therapy to be delivered by the therapy delivery device according to a second therapy program, the second therapy program comprising at least one therapy parameter value different from a respective therapy parameter value of the first therapy program,

wherein determining the one or more therapy parameter values for denervation therapy delivery comprises selecting one of the first therapy program or the second therapy program based on the respective first and second estimated volumes of influence.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the estimated volume of influence comprises a lesion, and wherein determining the one or more therapy parameter values for denervation therapy delivery comprises selecting the one or more therapy parameter values determined to result in lesioning of the target nerve and avoiding lesioning of a predetermined adverse-effect region.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more therapy parameter values comprises at least one of an electrical signal parameter, a thermal signal parameter, an ultrasound signal parameter, a microwave signal parameter, an optical parameter, or a chemical dosage parameter.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising controlling, by the processor, a medical device to deliver denervation therapy to the target nerve in accordance with the one or more therapy parameter values.

7. A system comprising:

a memory configured to store one or more tissue characteristics of tissue proximate a target nerve and a blood vessel of a patient; and

a processor coupled to the memory and configured to:

determine an estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy delivered by a therapy delivery device disposed within the blood vessel based on the one or more tissue characteristics,

generate a graphical representation of the tissue proximate the target nerve and the blood vessel and the estimated volume of influence,

determine one or more therapy parameter values for delivery of denervation therapy based on the estimated volume of influence, and

control the delivery of denervation therapy to the patient based on the one or more therapy parameter values.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the estimated volume of influence comprises a lesion.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the estimated volume of influence of the denervation therapy comprises a first estimated volume of influence of a first denervation therapy delivered by the therapy delivery device according to a first therapy program, the processor being further configured to:

determine a second estimated volume of influence of a second denervation therapy delivered by the therapy delivery device according to a second therapy program, the second therapy program comprising at least one therapy parameter value different from a respective therapy parameter value of the first therapy program,

wherein the processor is configured to determine the one or more therapy parameter values for the delivery of denervation therapy by selecting one of the first therapy program or the second therapy program based on the respective first and second estimated volumes of influence.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the estimated volume of influence comprises a lesion, and wherein the processor is configured to determine the one or more therapy parameter values for the delivery of denervation therapy by selecting the one or more therapy parameter values determined to result in lesioning of the target nerve and avoiding lesioning of a predetermined adverse-effect region.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more therapy parameter values comprises at least one of an electrical signal parameter, a thermal signal parameter, an ultrasound signal parameter, a microwave signal parameter, an optical signal parameter, or a chemical dosage parameter.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the processor is further configured to control a medical device to deliver denervation therapy to the target nerve in accordance with the one or more therapy parameter values.

13. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a therapy generator configured to generate, based on the one or more therapy parameter values, a denervation stimulus.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising the therapy delivery device configured to be coupled to the therapy generator, wherein the therapy generator is configured to deliver the denervation therapy to the patient via the therapy delivery device.

15. The system of claim 7 , wherein the therapy delivery device comprises at least one of an electrode, a radiofrequency (RF) probe, a thermal probe, a cryogenic probe, a microwave probe, an ultrasonic probe, an optical source, or a chemical injector.

16. The system of claim 7 , further comprising an imaging system configured to image the target nerve and the blood vessel.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the imaging system comprises at least one of a fluoroscopy system, a computer aided tomography (CAT) scan system, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, a positron emission tomography (PET) scan system, an electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system, an ultrasound system, or an optical imaging system.

18. The system of claim 7 , wherein the target nerve comprises a renal nerve and wherein the blood vessel comprises a renal artery.

19. A non-transitory computer-readable medium, comprising instructions that, when executed, cause at least one processor to:

determine one or more tissue characteristics of tissue proximate a target nerve and a blood vessel of a patient;

generate, based on the one or more tissue characteristics, an estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy delivered by a therapy delivery device disposed within the blood vessel;

generate a graphical user interface comprising a graphical representation of the tissue proximate the target nerve and the blood vessel and a graphical representation of the estimated volume of influence; and
