Abstract

A social media platform provides a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for accessing social media content submitted for public accessibility via the social media platform supported by the map-based GUI. The GUI includes a map providing interactive location-based searching functionality in that selection of a target location by the user in the GUI, such as by tapping or clicking at the target location, triggers a search for social media content having geo-tag data indicating geographic locations within a geographical search area centered on the target location. A search period for which content is returned is dynamically variable based on the duration for which the tap or click is held.

Claims (60)

1 . A method comprising:

causing display on a user device of a graphical user interface (GUI) for a social media platform that provides online availability of social media items posted to the social media platform by multiple users, each social media item having an associated posting time at which the respective social media item was posted to the social media platform;

via the GUI, receiving a search query for social media content, the search query being provided by a user input that comprises a select-and-hold interaction with a selected feature of the GUI, the user input having a sustainment duration for which user selection of the selected feature is sustained;

based at least in part on the sustainment duration, automatically calculating a length of a catchment timespan for social media item posting times with respect to which a social media content search is to be performed, the catchment timespan extending backwards in time between the present and an earlier limit spaced in time from the present by the calculated length of time, the calculation of the length of the catchment timespan being such that the catchment timespan is variable in length dependent on variation in length of the sustainment duration;

performing the social media content search to identify search results responsive to the search query, the search results being limited to social media items having respective posting times falling within the catchment timespan; and

causing display on the user device of the search results.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user input is a tap-and-hold or a click-and-hold input, with the sustainment duration being defined by time elapsed between tap or click initiation and release.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the GUI is a map-based GUI that includes an interactive map of a geographic area;

wherein the search query is a location-based search query, the user input comprising selection of a target location on the map of the GUI; and

wherein the search is a location-based search for geo-tagged social media content, the location-based search being performed based at least in part on a combination of:

the user-selected target location; and

the catchment timespan calculated based on the sustainment duration.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein:

the interactive map includes one or more gallery icons that are displayed at respective locations on the map and that are user-selectable to trigger display of social media content associated with the respective gallery icons; and

wherein the target location is spaced from the one or more gallery icons, the location-based search being performed with respect to a target area substantially centered on the target location.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein:

the GUI is displayed on a touchscreen forming part of the user device; and

wherein the user input comprises haptic contact with the touchscreen, the sustainment duration being defined by an interval for which the user maintains contact with the touchscreen at the target location.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the calculating of the catchment timespan comprises:

determining whether or not the sustainment duration exceeds a predefined threshold duration, and

determining the length of the catchment timespan based at least in part on the determination as to whether or not the sustainment duration exceeds the predefined threshold duration.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the calculating of the catchment timespan length further comprises, in response to determining that the sustainment duration does not exceed the threshold duration, setting the length of the catchment timespan to a predefined default catchment timespan length.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the calculating of the catchment timespan length further comprises, in response to determining that the sustainment duration exceeds the threshold duration, determining the length of the catchment timespan to be greater than the default catchment timespan length.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the calculating of the catchment timespan length is such that the catchment timespan is variable in length as a function of an excess interval by which the sustainment duration exceeds the threshold duration, such that the catchment timespan increases in length with an increase in the excess interval.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein display of the search results comprises automated sequential replay of the user device of a plurality of social media items comprising the search results.

11 . A system comprising:

a search engine comprising one or more computer processors configured to perform operations comprising:

causing display on a user device of a graphical user interface (GUI) for a social media platform that provides online availability of social media items posted to the social media platform by multiple users, each social media item having an associated posting time at which the respective social media item was posted to the social media platform;

via the GUI, receiving a search query for social media content, the search query being provided by a user input that comprises a select-and-hold interaction with a selected feature of the GUI, the user input having a sustainment duration for which user selection of the selected feature is sustained;

based at least in part on the sustainment duration, automatically calculating a length of a catchment timespan for social media item posting times with respect to which a social media content search is to be performed, the catchment timespan extending backwards in time between the present and an earlier limit spaced in time from the present by the calculated length of time, the calculation of the length of the catchment timespan being such that the catchment timespan is variable in length dependent on variation in length of the sustainment duration;

performing the social media content search to identify search results responsive to the search query, the search results being limited to social media items having respective posting times falling within the catchment timespan; and

causing display on the user device of the search results.

12 . The system of claim 11 wherein the user input is a tap-and-hold or a click-and-hold input, with the sustainment duration being defined by time elapsed between tap or click initiation and release.

13 . The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a map engine comprising one or more computer processors configured to cause display of an interactive map of a geographic area as part of the GUI, the GUI being a map-based graphical user interface;

wherein the search query is a location-based search query, the user input comprising selection of a target location on the map of the GUI; and

wherein the search is a location-based search for geo-tagged social media content, the location-based search being performed based at least in part on a combination of:

the user-selected target location; and

the catchment timespan calculated based on the sustainment duration.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein:

the interactive map includes one or more gallery icons that are displayed at respective locations on the map and that are user-selectable to trigger display of social media content associated with the respective gallery icons; and

wherein the target location is spaced from the one or more gallery icons, the search engine being configured to perform the location-based search with respect to a target area substantially centered on the target location.
