Abstract

Structures for scattering light at multiple wavelengths are disclosed. Scattering elements are fabricated with different geometric dimensions and arrangements, to scatter or focus light at the same focal distance for each wavelength, or at different focal distances according to the desired application. The scattering elements fabricated on a substrate can be peeled off with a polymer matrix and attached to a lens to modify the optical properties of the lens.

Claims (13)

1. A structure comprising:

a lens having a curved surface and configured to operate at a set wavelength;

scattering elements on the curved surface; and

a polymer matrix surrounding the scattering elements at least on one side of each scattering element,

wherein:

the scattering elements are configured to modify an optical property of the lens, and

the scattering elements are made of amorphous silicon and have dimensions smaller than the wavelength at which the lens is configured to operate.

2. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the optical property is a focal length of the lens.

3. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the optical property is a coma aberration of the lens.

4. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the scattering elements are cylindrical posts.

5. The structure of claim 1 , wherein physical dimensions of the scattering elements are configured to give a phase profile of optical waves at the curved surface, the phase profile being equal to a difference between a first phase profile at the curved surface and a second phase profile at the curved surface, the second phase profile being a desired phase profile different from the first phase profile.

6. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the scattering elements are arranged in a hexagonal lattice.

7. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the scattering elements are arranged in a non-random configuration.
