Abstract

Systems and methods for indicating that a boundary is crossed during execution of a video game are described. One of the methods includes generating, by a camera, a field-of-view, the field-of-view encompassing a plurality of boundaries that define a volume. The method further includes capturing, by the camera, one or more images of a head-mounted display (HMD) within the field-of-view. The method includes identifying, by a processor, a position of the HMD in a real-world environment from the one or more images. The method includes determining, by the processor, whether the HMD at the position has crossed one of the boundaries. The method includes generating one or more video frames including a guard rail upon determining that the HMD has crossed the one of the boundaries and sending the one or more video frames to the HMD for display.

Claims (52)

1. A method for indicating that a boundary is crossed during execution of a video game, comprising:

identifying, by a camera, a field-of-view, the field-of-view encompassing a plurality of boundaries that define a volume;

capturing, by the camera, one or more images of a head-mounted display (HMD) within the field-of-view;

identifying, by a processor, a position of the HMD in a real-world environment from the one or more images;

determining, by the processor, whether the HMD at the position has crossed one of the boundaries;

generating one or more video frames including a guard rail upon determining that the HMD has crossed the one of the boundaries; and

sending the one or more video frames to the HMD for display.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the guard rail is a full guard rail, wherein the full guard rail is a grid.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the guard rail is image data that is overlaid over a virtual scene that is displayed within the HMD, wherein the guard rail depicts a safety boundary that the user is not to cross.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the guard rail is a partial guard rail or a full guard rail, wherein the guard rail is depicted as a highlighted set of interconnect lines that glow in a contrasting color compared to a virtual scene displayed within the HMD.

5. A method for indicating that a boundary is crossed during execution of a video game, comprising:

identifying, by a camera, a field-of-view, the field-of-view encompassing a plurality of boundaries that define a volume;

capturing, by the camera, one or more images of a tracked object within the field-of-view;

identifying, by a processor, a position of the tracked object in a real-world environment from the one or more images;

determining, by the processor, whether the tracked object at the position has crossed one of the boundaries;

generating one or more video frames including a guard rail upon determining that the tracked object has crossed the one of the boundaries; and

sending the one or more video frames to a head-mounted display (HMD) for display.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the guard rail is a partial guard rail, wherein the partial guard rail is a grid.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the guard rail is image data that is overlaid over a virtual scene that is displayed within the HMD, wherein the guard rail depicts a safety boundary that the user is not to cross.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the guard rail is a partial guard rail or a full guard rail, wherein the guard rail is depicted as a highlighted set of interconnect lines that glow in a contrasting color compared to a virtual scene displayed within the HMD.

9. A method for indicating that a boundary is crossed during execution of a video game, comprising:

identifying, by a camera, a field-of-view, the field-of-view encompassing a plurality of boundaries that define a volume;

capturing, by the camera, one or more images of a head-mounted display (HMD) within the field-of-view;

identifying, by a processor, a position of the HMD in a real-world environment and a lack of an image of a tracked object from the one or more images;

determining, by the processor, whether the HMD at the position is within one of the boundaries;

determining, by the processor, that a pre-determined number of light sources on a head band of the HMD is within the field-of-view of the camera from the one or more images,

generating one or more video frames including an occlusion guard rail upon determining that the HMD is within the one of the boundaries and that the pre-determined number of light sources on the head band is within the field-of-view and that the image of the tracked object is excluded from the one or more images captured by the camera; and

sending the one or more video frames to the HMD for display.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the occlusion guard rail has multiple surfaces, wherein one of the surfaces is angled with respect to another one of the surfaces.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the occlusion guard rail is a grid.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the guard rail is image data that is overlaid over a virtual scene that is displayed within the HMD, wherein the guard rail depicts a safety boundary that the user is not to cross.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the guard rail is a partial guard rail or a full guard rail, wherein the guard rail is depicted as a highlighted set of interconnect lines that glow in a contrasting color compared to a virtual scene displayed within the HMD.

14. A method for indicating that a boundary is crossed during execution of a video game, comprising:

identifying, by a camera, a field-of-view;

capturing, by the camera, one or more images of a head-mounted display (HMD) within the field-of-view;

identifying, by a processor, a lack of an image of a tracked object from the one or more images;

determining, by the processor, that a pre-determined number of light sources on a head band of the HMD is within the field-of-view of the camera from the one or more images,

generating one or more video frames including an occlusion guard rail upon determining that the pre-determined number of light sources on the head band is within the field-of-view and that the image of the tracked object is lacking from the one or more images captured by the camera; and

sending the one or more video frames to the HMD for display.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the occlusion guard rail has multiple surfaces, wherein one of the surfaces is angled with respect to another one of the surfaces.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the occlusion guard rail is a grid.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the guard rail is image data that is overlaid over a virtual scene that is displayed within the HMD, wherein the guard rail depicts a safety boundary that the user is not to cross.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the guard rail is a partial guard rail or a full guard rail, wherein the guard rail is depicted as a highlighted set of interconnect lines that glow in a contrasting color compared to a virtual scene displayed within the HMD.

19. A method for indicating that a boundary is crossed during execution of a video game, comprising:

identifying, by a camera, a field-of-view;

capturing, by the camera, one or more images based on the field-of-view;

identifying, by a processor, a lack of an image of a tracked object from the one or more images;

generating one or more video frames including an occlusion guard rail upon determining that the image of the tracked object is lacking from the one or more images captured by the camera; and

sending the one or more video frames to a head-mounted display (HMD) for display.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the occlusion guard rail is a grid.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein the guard rail is image data that is overlaid over a virtual scene that is displayed within the HMD, wherein the guard rail depicts a safety boundary that the user is not to cross.

22. The method of claim 19 , wherein the guard rail is a partial guard rail or a full guard rail, wherein the guard rail is depicted as a highlighted set of interconnect lines that glow in a contrasting color compared to a virtual scene displayed within the HMD.
