Abstract

The present disclosure relates to an electronic smoking article that provides for improved aerosol delivery. Particularly, the article provides for separate delivery of two or more components of an aerosol precursor composition to one or more heaters so as to control the rate of delivery or the rate of heating of the separate components of the aerosol precursor composition.

Claims (36)

1. A smoking article comprising:

a shell having a proximate end that includes a mouthpiece with an opening at a proximate end thereof;

an air passage through at least a portion of the shell;

a first reservoir within the shell, the first reservoir containing a nicotine solution;

a second reservoir within the shell separate from the first reservoir, the second reservoir containing a composition comprising an organic acid;

an aerosolization zone substantially in line with the air passage;

a heater positioned within the aerosolization zone;

a first transport element providing fluid communication between the first reservoir and the aerosolization zone;

a second transport element separate from the first transport element providing fluid communication between the second reservoir and the aerosolization zone;

wherein the nicotine solution and the organic acid remain substantially separated until combination in the aerosolization zone, and

wherein transporting the nicotine solution from the first reservoir to the aerosolization zone via the first transport element and transporting the organic acid from the second reservoir to the aerosolization zone via the second transport element is normalized such that a rate of transport of the nicotine solution differs from the rate of transport of the organic acid material by about 15% or less.

2. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the first transport element and the second transport element are formed of different materials.

3. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the first transport element exhibits one or more different transport properties relative to the second transport element.

4. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein one or both of the first reservoir and the second reservoir is formed of a porous material.

5. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein one or both of the first reservoir and the second reservoir is configured as a walled container with at least one opening.

6. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the aerosolization zone includes a plurality of heaters.

7. The smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the nicotine solution and the composition comprising the organic acid are separately heated by the plurality of heaters.

8. The smoking article of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of heaters is configured for heating to different temperatures.

9. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the first transport element and the second transport element differ in one or more of cross-sectional shape, material type, surface treatment, and overall dimensions.

10. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the first transport element is a wick having a first wicking rate, and wherein the second transport element is a wick having a second, different wicking rate.

11. The smoking article of claim 10 , wherein the wicks independently comprise a material selected from the group consisting of fibrous materials, carbon foams, sintered material, capillary tubes, temperature adaptive polymers, and combinations thereof.

12. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprising an organic acid further comprises a polyhydric alcohol.

13. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the organic acid is levulinic acid.

14. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the organic acid is lactic acid.

15. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the nicotine solution and the composition comprising the organic acid are separately communicated to the aerosolization zone for combination in a ratio of about 0.1 to about 0.5 moles of the organic acid per one mole of the nicotine.

16. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the smoking article is configured to deliver a wet total particulate matter (WTPM) content of about 1.0 mg to about 5.0 mg during a puff of approximately 2 seconds in duration.

17. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the smoking article is configured to deliver a WTPM content of about 1.0 mg to about 4.0 mg in a total puff volume of about 25 ml to about 75 ml.

18. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the heater is configured to provide about 5 to about 50 Joules of heat per second.

19. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the shell defines a first unit, and wherein the shell has a distal end that engages a second unit and has an opposing, proximate end that includes the mouthpiece.

20. The smoking article of claim 19 , wherein the second unit comprises an outer body having a connecting end that is engaged by the distal end of the shell of the first unit and having an opposing, closed end.

21. The smoking article of claim 20 , wherein the distal end of the shell of the first unit engages the connecting end of the outer body of the second unit in a press-fit engagement.

22. The smoking article of claim 19 , wherein the second unit includes one or more control components configured to:

detect draw on the smoking article;

provide power from the power source to the heater in response to the draw on the smoking article;

determine cessation of the draw on the smoking article and, in response to the cessation of the draw on the smoking article, discontinue provision of power to the heater; and

determine that a defined time lapse has occurred since cessation of the draw and deactivate a function of the smoking article.
