Temperature controlled short duration ablation with multiple electrodes
Apparatus, including a catheter configured to be inserted into an organ of a human body. A plurality of electrodes are deployed on the catheter, the electrodes being configured to transfer radiofrequency (RF) ablation energy to tissue of the organ. The apparatus also includes a power supply configured to supply the RF ablation energy at a level of up to 100 W to each of the plurality of electrodes simultaneously, so as to ablate respective sections of the tissue of the organ in contact with the electrodes.
1. A system comprising:
a power supply configured to measure an impedance of each of a plurality of electrodes deployed on a catheter, each of the plurality of electrodes having a temperature sensor, the power supply being further configured to supply radiofrequency (RF) ablation energy to each of the plurality of electrodes individually so as to ablate tissue of an organ in contact with a respective one of the plurality of electrodes;
a temperature module configured to determine a temperature of the surface of the organ tissue in contact with each of the plurality of electrodes in response to receiving sensing signals from each electrode temperature sensor;
one or more processors coupled to the power supply and the temperature module;
a non-transitory computer readable medium storing a plurality of instructions, which
when executed, cause the one or more processors, for each of the plurality of electrodes individually and separately, to:
i) halt supply of the RF ablation energy from the power supply to the respective one of the plurality of electrodes when the measured impedance exceeds a preset value,
ii) cause the power supply to reduce the RF ablation energy to the respective one of the plurality of electrodes when the measured impedance does not exceed a preset value and when the determined temperature exceeds a temperature threshold;
iii) halt supply of the RF ablation energy from the power supply to the respective one of the plurality of electrodes when the measured impedance does not exceed a preset value, the determined temperature does not exceed a temperature threshold and a preset ablation time has been reached; or
iv) continue ablation when the measured impedance does not exceed a preset value, the determined temperature does not exceed a temperature threshold and the preset ablation time has not been reached.
2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electrodes comprises up to twelve electrodes, and wherein the power supply is configured to provide up to 1.2 kW of radiofrequency power.
3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the catheter comprises a balloon catheter.
4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the catheter comprises a basket catheter.
5. A method, comprising:
measuring, by a power supply, an impedance of each of a plurality of electrodes deployed on a catheter, each of the plurality of electrodes having a temperature sensor, the power supply being further configured to supply radiofrequency (RF) ablation energy to each of the plurality of electrodes individually so as to ablate tissue of an organ in contact with a respective one of the plurality of electrodes;
