Abstract

An external vascular support for shaping a vein-artery junction between an artery and a vein anastomosed to the artery, the support comprising: an arterial portion that is shaped to be in apposition with an exterior wall of the artery when the artery is accommodated within a lumen of the arterial portion, and a venous portion that is shaped to be in apposition with an exterior wall of the vein when the vein is accommodated within a lumen of the venous portion, wherein the arterial and venous portions are physically connected at an acute angle, and the corner of the acute angle is shaped as a rounding having a radius of curvature in the range of 0.25 mm to 4 mm.

Claims (25)

1. An external vascular support for shaping a vein-artery junction between an artery and a vein anastomosed to the artery, the support comprising:

an arterial portion that is shaped to be in apposition with an exterior wall of the artery when the artery is accommodated within a lumen of the arterial portion,

a venous portion that is shaped to be in apposition with an exterior wall of the vein when the vein is accommodated within a lumen of the venous portion, and

a brace coupled to the arterial portion, wherein the brace together with the arterial portion encircles the artery to secure the arterial portion to the artery, and

wherein the arterial portion and/or the venous portion comprises at least one protrusion configured to press onto the exterior wall of the artery and/or the vein, the protrusion being positioned and dimensioned to modify blood flow inside the artery and/or the vein.

2. The external vascular support of claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion is pre-formed into either the arterial portion or the venous portion.

3. The external vascular support of claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion comprises a portion of either the arterial portion or the venous portion pressed inward into the lumen associated with the respective portion.

4. The external vascular support of claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion comprises a pre-shaped portion coupled to either the arterial portion or the venous portion.

5. The external vascular support of claim 1 , wherein the brace secures the at least one protrusion of the arterial portion onto the exterior wall of the artery.

6. The external vascular support of claim 1 , wherein the venous portion comprises a truncated conical shape having an end with the smallest diameter adjacent to the vein-artery junction.

7. The external vascular support of claim 1 , wherein the junction is an end-to- side anastomosis of the artery and the vein.

8. The external vascular support of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor coupled to the arterial portion or the venous portion, for detecting the flow of blood within the external vascular support.

9. The external vascular support of claim 8 , wherein a signal generated by the sensor is used to adjust the characteristics of the at least one protrusion, to further modify the blood flow.

10. A method for applying an external vascular support for shaping a vein- artery junction between an artery and a vein anastomosed to the artery, the method comprising the steps of:

applying an arterial portion to be in apposition with an exterior wall of the artery when the artery is accommodated within a lumen of the arterial portion,

applying a venous portion to be in apposition with an exterior wall of the vein when the vein is accommodated within a lumen of the venous portion, and

applying a brace to be coupled to the arterial portion, wherein the brace together with the arterial portion encircles the artery to secure the arterial portion to the artery, and wherein the arterial portion and/or the venous portion comprises at least one protrusion configured to press onto the exterior wall of the artery and/or the vein, the protrusion being positioned and dimensioned to modify blood flow inside the artery and/or the vein.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the at least one protrusion is pre-formed into either the arterial portion or the venous portion.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the at least one protrusion comprises a portion of either the arterial portion or the venous portion pressed inward into the lumen associated with the respective portion.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the at least one protrusion comprises a pre-shaped portion coupled to either the arterial portion or the venous portion.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the brace secures the at least one protrusion of the arterial portion onto the exterior wall of the artery.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the venous portion comprises a truncated conical shape having an end with the smallest diameter adjacent to the vein-artery junction.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the junction is an end-to-side anastomosis of the artery and the vein.

17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising coupling a sensor to the arterial portion or the venous portion, for detecting the flow of blood within the external vascular support.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein a signal generated by the sensor is used to adjust the characteristics of the at least one protrusion, to further modify the blood flow.
