Abstract

A system ( 1 ) is disclosed in which a network entity determines whether a radio bearer should be maintained or released for a communications device ( 2 ). The communications device ( 2 ) establishes the radio bearer via a base station ( 5 ) of the communications system ( 1 ) and communicates data using the established radio bearer. The communications device ( 2 ) determines whether any further data is to be sent or received and/or whether a user-plane connection is required. The communications device ( 2 ) then provides information to the network entity identifying a result of said determination for use in determining whether the radio bearer should be maintained or released.

Claims (28)

1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

transmitting, to a base station, a Radio Resource Control (RRC) message which includes a release assistance indication and uplink data, wherein the release assistance indication indicates whether further transmission is expected following transmission of the uplink data,

wherein the release assistance indication is forwarded from the base station to a Mobility Management Entity (MME), and

wherein when the release assistance indication indicates that further transmission is expected, a connection associated with the UE is released after the base station transmits, to the UE, downlink data following the base station sending of the release assistance indication.

2. The method of the claim 1 , wherein the connection associated with the UE is an S1 or an RRC connection.

3. The method of the claim 1 , wherein the release assistance indication is transmitted using an initial UE message.

4. A method performed by a base station, the method comprising:

receiving, from a user equipment (UE), a Radio Resource Control (RRC) message which includes a release assistance indication and uplink data, wherein the release assistance indication indicates whether further transmission is expected following transmission of the uplink data; and

forwarding the release assistance indication to a Mobility Management Entity (MME),

wherein when the release assistance indication indicates that further transmission is expected, a connection associated with the UE is released after the base station transmits, to the UE, downlink data following the base station sending of the release assistance indication.

5. The method of the claim 4 , wherein the connection associated with the UE is an S1 or an RRC connection.

6. The method of the claim 4 , wherein the release assistance indication is received using an initial UE message.

7. A user equipment (UE), the UE comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

one or more processors configured to execute the instructions to:

transmit, to a base station, a Radio Resource Control (RRC) uplink message which includes a release assistance indication and uplink data, wherein the release assistance indication indicates whether further transmission is expected following transmission of the uplink data,

wherein the release assistance indication is forwarded from the base station to a Mobility Management Entity (MME), and

wherein when the release assistance indication indicates that further transmission is expected, a connection associated with the UE is released after the base station transmits, to the UE, downlink data following the base station sending of the release assistance indication.

8. The UE of the claim 7 , wherein the connection associated with the UE is an S1 or an RRC connection.

9. The UE of the claim 7 , wherein the release assistance indication is transmitted using an initial UE message.

10. A base station in a wireless communication system, the base station comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

one or more processors configured to execute the instructions to:

receive, from a user equipment (UE), a Radio Resource Control (RRC) message which includes a release assistance indication and uplink data, wherein the release assistance indication indicates whether further transmission is expected following transmission of the uplink data; and

forward the parameter to a Mobility Management Entity (MME),

wherein when the release assistance indication indicates that further transmission is expected, a connection associated with the UE is released after the base station transmits, to the UE, downlink data following the base station sending of the release assistance indication.

11. The base station of the claim 10 , wherein the connection associated with the UE is an S1 or an RRC connection.

12. The base station of the claim 10 , wherein the release assistance indication is received using an initial UE message.
