Abstract

Systems and methods for controlling operation of a well, of which the method includes receiving an operation setting for operation of a system that provides lift gas into and produces gas from the well, monitoring operation of the system using a first controller, determining, using the first controller, that the system is not operating at the operation setting, and in response to determining that the system is not operating at the operation setting, sending, using a two-way communication link from the first controller to a second controller, a control signal to the second controller. The control signal is configured to cause the second controller to modify an operation of a compressor of the system.

Claims (46)

1. A method for controlling operation of a well, comprising:

receiving an operation setting for operation of a system that provides lift gas into and produces gas from the well;

monitoring operation of the system using, a first controller;

determining, using the first controller, that the system is not operating at the operation setting; and

in response to determining that the system is not operating at the operating setting, sending, using a two-way communication link from the first controller to a second controller, a control signal to the second controller wherein the control signal is configured to cause the second controller to modify an operation of a compressor of the system, wherein the operation setting is transferred from a remote device via a modem connected to the second controller, wherein the operation setting comprises a cycle time for travel of a plunger in the well, and wherein the monitoring, operation comprises timing the travel of the plunger in the well.

2. The method, of claim 1 , further comprising, using the second controller:

selecting a first setpoint for the compressor;

operating the compressor at the first setpoint;

receiving the control signal;

selecting a second set point in response to receiving the control signal;

operating the compressor at the second setpoint.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein selecting the first operating setpoint comprises receiving the first operating setpoint from a user.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

sending an acknowledgment signal to the first controller using the second controller in response to receiving the control signal, via the two-way communication link;

sending a second control signal from the second controller to the first controller in response to selecting the second operating setpoint, via the two-way communication link; and

sending an acknowledgement signal from the first controller to the second controller in response to receiving the second control signal, via the two-way communication link.

5. A method for controlling operation of a well, comprising:

receiving an operation setting for operation of a system that provides lift gas into and produces gas from the well;

monitoring operation of the system using a first controller;

determining, using the first controller, that the system is not operating at operation setting; and

in response to determining that the system is not operating at the operating setting, sending, using, a two-way communication link from the first controller to a second controller, a control signal to the second controller wherein the control signal is configured to cause the second controller to modify an operation of a compressor of the system, wherein the operation setting is transferred from a remote device via a modem connected to the second controller, wherein the control signal comprises a binary on/off signal.

6. A system, comprising:

a compressor configured to compressed gas;

a compressor controller configured to control an operation of the compressor;

a wellhead configured to receive compressed gas from the compressor;

a wellhead controller coupled to the wellhead and configured to measure one or more operation settings; and

a communication two-way link between the wellhead controller and the compressor controller, wherein the wellhead controller is configured to send one or more control signals to the compressor controller via the two-way communication link, and wherein the compressor controller is configured to adjust the operation of the compressor in response to the one or more control signals wherein the compressor controller is configured to operate the compressor at a first setpoint and at a second setpoint, wherein the compressor operating at the second setpoint increases a gas flow rate to the wellhead, and wherein the compressor controller is configured to operate the compressor at the first setpoint until the compressor controller receives the one or more control signals, and is configured to operate the compressor at the second setpoint in response to receiving the one or more control signals and wherein the compressor comprises a first inlet valve and a second inlet valve;

the first inlet valve corresponds to a first suction pressure, and the second inlet valve corresponds to a second suction pressure, the second suction pressure being greater than the first suction pressure; and

the first inlet valve is open when the compressor is operating at the first setpoint, and the second inlet valve is open when the compressor is operating at the second setpoint.

7. A method for controlling operation of a well, comprising:

introducing a gas into a separator;

removing particles from the gas using the separator to produce a clean gas;

introducing the clean gas into a compressor;

determining when a plunger is at a predetermined position n the well;

transmitting a first signal to a controller when the plunger is at the predetermined position in the well;

causing the compressor to not compress the clean gas flowing therethrough in response to the first signal;

actuating a valve into a first position in response to the first signal, thereby allowing the plunger to descend in the well;

transmitting a second signal to the controller a predetermined amount of time after the plunger is determined to be at the predetermined position in the well;

compressing the clean gas using the compressor in response to the second signal; and

actuating the valve into a second position in response to the second signal, thereby causing the plunger to ascend in the well.

8. The method of claim 7 , when the pre-determined position is proximate to a top of the well.

9. The method, of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined position is when the plunger contacts an actuator, a lubricator, or both in the well.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the clean gas that is not compressed has a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure and less than the compressed clean gas.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined amount of time corresponds to an amount of time for the plunger to descend in the well and contact an actuator proximate to the bottom of the well.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein actuating the valve into the first position causes the uncompressed clean gas to recirculate back into a pressure vessel.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein actuating the valve into the second position causes, the compressed clean gas to flow into the well.
