Abstract

A passive optical network includes a central office providing subscriber signals; a fiber distribution hub including an optical power splitter and a termination field; and a drop terminal. Distribution fibers have first ends coupled to output ports of a drop terminal and second ends coupled to the termination field. A remote unit of a DAS is retrofitted to the network by routing a second feeder cable from a base station to the hub and coupling one the distribution fibers to the second feeder cable. The remote unit is plugged into the corresponding drop terminal port, for example, with a cable arrangement having a sealed wave division multiplexer.

Claims (27)

1. A cable arrangement comprising:

a wave division multiplexer disposed between a single optical fiber and multiple optical fibers to form a cable;

a distal end of the single optical fiber being terminated by an optical connector at a first end of the cable whereby the distal end is enabled to be plugged into an empty port at a drop terminal, the optical connector terminating the distal end of the single optical fiber being a hardened optical connector, the wave division multiplexer demultiplexing optical signals carried by the single optical fiber from the drop terminal and routing the demultiplexed signals to the multiple optical fibers;

distal ends of the multiple optical fibers being terminated by optical connectors at a second end of the cable whereby the distal ends are enabled to be plugged into ports at a remote unit, the wave division multiplexer also multiplexing optical signals carried by the multiple optical fibers from the remote unit and routing the multiplexed signal to the single optical fiber; and

a protective enclosure disposed only at an intermediate portion of the cable, the protective enclosure defining an environmentally sealed interior, the wave division multiplexer, a portion of the single optical fiber, and portions of the multiple optical fibers being disposed within the protective enclosure while other portions of the single and multiple optical fibers are disposed external of the protective enclosure.

2. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the optical connectors terminating the distal ends of the multiple optical fibers are hardened connectors.

3. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the wave division multiplexer is a coarse wave division multiplexer.

4. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the wave division multiplexer is a dense wave division multiplexer.

5. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the connectorized end of the single optical fiber is plugged into an output port of a drop terminal.

6. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein distal ends of the multiple optical fibers are plugged into ports at a remote unit.

7. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the multiple optical fibers of the cable arrangement are plugged into receive ports and transmit ports of a DAS remote access unit.

8. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein pairs of the multiple optical fibers are terminated at duplex optical connectors and plugged into corresponding receive and transmit ports.

9. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein between four and thirty-two fibers extend from the wave division multiplexer.

10. The cable arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein between eight and twenty-four fibers extend from the wave division multiplexer.

11. A passive optical network system comprising:

a drop terminal deployed in the field, the drop terminal having a plurality of ports;

an outdoor remote unit; and

a cable arrangement routed between an empty one of the ports of the drop terminal and the remote unit, the cable arrangement being disposable on a pole, the cable arrangement including a wave division multiplexer disposed between a single optical fiber and multiple optical fibers, the wave division multiplexer demultiplexing optical signals carried by the single optical fiber from the drop terminal and routing the demultiplexed signals to the multiple optical fibers, the wave division multiplexer also multiplexing optical signals carried by the multiple optical fibers from the remote unit and routing the multiplexed signal to the single optical fiber, the cable arrangement also including a protective closure surrounding the wave division multiplexer, only a portion of the single optical fiber, and only a portion of each of the multiple optical fibers.

12. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the single optical fiber is terminated by an optical connector.

13. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the single optical fiber is terminated by an environmentally sealed connector and plugged into an output port of the drop terminal mounted to a power line pole, light pole, or other such outdoor structure.

14. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the multiple optical fibers are terminated by optical connectors.

15. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the multiple optical fibers are terminated by environmentally sealed connectors and plugged into ports of the outdoor remote unit for a Distributed Antenna System.

16. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the optical connector terminating the single optical fiber of the cable arrangement is not environmentally sealed.

17. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the connectors terminating the multiple optical fibers of the cable arrangement are not environmentally sealed.

18. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the drop terminal has between two and sixteen ports.

19. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the outdoor remote unit is mounted to a pole.

20. The passive optical network system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the wave division multiplexer is overmolded to form the protective closure.
