Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method of defining a mating surface in a first side of an arthroplasty jig. The mating surface is configured to matingly receive and contact a corresponding patient surface including at least one of a bone surface and a cartilage surface. The first side is oriented towards the patient surface when the mating surface matingly receives and contacts the patient surface. The method may include: a) identifying a contour line associated with the patient surface as represented in a medical image; b) evaluating via an algorithm the adequacy of the contour line for defining a portion of the mating surface associated with the contour line; c) modifying the contour line if the contour line is deemed inadequate; and d) employing the modified contour line to define the portion of the mating surface associated with the contour line.

Claims (34)

1. An arthroplasty jig for use in performing an arthroplasty procedure on a bone of a patient, the bone forming a portion of a joint and comprising an articular surface bounded by a border, and a non-articular surface extending away from the border of the articular surface, the arthroplasty jig comprising:

a jig body comprising:

a first mating surface defined on a bone facing side of the jig body, the first mating surface configured to matingly contact the articular surface of the bone when the jig body is applied to the bone to perform the arthroplasty procedure;

a second mating surface defined on the bone facing side of the jig body, the second mating surface configured to matingly contact the non-articular surface of the bone when the jig body is applied to the bone to perform the arthroplasty procedure;

a spaced-apart surface defined on the bone facing side of the jig body and separating the first mating surface and the second mating surface, the spaced-apart surface configured to be recessed from contact with the border of the articular surface when the first and second mating surface matingly contact the articular surface, and the non-articular surface, respectively; and

a first aperture configured to guide a first tool into the bone, the first aperture extending through the jig body and comprising a first preoperatively planned position and orientation relative to the first and second mating surfaces.

2. The arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , further comprising a planar resection guide configured to guide a planar resection in the bone.

3. The arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein no surfaces of the jig body are configured to make mating contact with the border of the articular surface.

4. The arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the first aperture extends through the first mating surface.

5. The arthroplasty jig of claim 4 , further comprising a second aperture configured to guide a second tool into the bone, the second aperture extending through the jig body and comprising a second preoperatively planned position and orientation relative to the first and second mating surfaces.

6. The arthroplasty jig of claim 5 , wherein the second aperture extends through the spaced-apart surface.

7. The arthroplasty jig of claim 5 , wherein the second aperture does not extend through the first mating surface.

8. The arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the bone is a tibia, or a femur.

9. The arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the arthroplasty jig is manufactured via a rapid prototyping process.

10. The arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the first mating surface is defined within an inner portion of the articular surface of the bone, the inner portion not extending to the border.

11. The arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein the first mating surface is defined within an inner portion of the articular surface of the bone, the inner portion not extending to the border.

12. The arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein the first tool comprises at least one of a pin and a drill bit.

13. The arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the first tool comprises at least one of a pin and a drill bit.

14. An arthroplasty jig for use in performing an arthroplasty procedure on a bone of a patient, the bone forming a portion of a joint and comprising an articular surface bounded by a border, and a non-articular surface extending away from the border of the articular surface, the arthroplasty jig comprising:

a jig body comprising:

a first mating surface defined on a bone facing side of the jig body, the first mating surface configured to matingly contact the articular surface of the bone when the jig body is applied to the bone to perform the arthroplasty procedure;

a second mating surface defined on the bone facing side of the jig body, the second mating surface configured to matingly contact the non-articular surface of the bone when the jig body is applied to the bone to perform the arthroplasty procedure;

a non-mating surface defined on the bone facing side of the jig body and separating the first mating surface and the second mating surface, the non-mating surface configured to oppose the border of the articular surface when the first and second mating surface matingly contact the articular surface, and the non-articular surface, respectively; and

a first aperture configured to guide a first tool into the bone, the first aperture extending through the jig body and comprising a first preoperatively planned position and orientation relative to the first and second mating surfaces.

15. The arthroplasty jig of claim 14 , further comprising a planar resection guide configured to guide a planar resection in the bone.

16. The arthroplasty jig of claim 14 , wherein no surfaces of the jig body are configured to make mating contact with the border of the articular surface.

17. The arthroplasty jig of claim 14 , wherein the first aperture extends through the first mating surface.

18. The arthroplasty jig of claim 17 , further comprising a second aperture configured to guide a second tool into the bone, the second aperture extending through the jig body and comprising a second preoperatively planned position and orientation relative to the first and second mating surfaces.

19. The arthroplasty jig of claim 18 , wherein the second aperture extends through the spaced-apart surface.

20. The arthroplasty jig of claim 18 , wherein the second aperture does not extend through the first mating surface.

21. The arthroplasty jig of claim 14 , wherein the bone is a tibia, or a femur.

22. The arthroplasty jig of claim 14 , wherein the arthroplasty jig is manufactured via a rapid prototyping process.

23. The arthroplasty jig of claim 14 , wherein the non-mating surface does not make contact with the border of the articular surface when the first and second mating surface matingly contact the articular surface, and the non-articular surface, respectively.

24. The arthroplasty jig of claim 14 , wherein the non-mating surface is recessed from contact with the border of the articular surface.
