Abstract

A medical device for performing a surgical procedure may include an elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween. The medical device may also include a handle connected to the proximal end of the elongate member, an end effector assembly connected to the distal end of the elongate member, and a cutting device configured to extend from the end effector assembly, wherein the cutting device has a retracted configuration in which the cutting device is withdrawn into the end effector assembly and a deployed configuration in which the cutting device extends from the end effector assembly.

Claims (47)

1. A medical device for performing a surgical procedure, the medical device comprising:

an elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween;

a cup connected to the distal end of the elongate member, the cup including a first wall and a second wall; and

a cutting device configured to extend from the cup, the cutting device having (1) a retracted configuration in which a distal end of the cutting device is disposed between the first wall and the second wall without projecting longitudinally beyond either of the first wall or the second wall; and (2) a deployed configuration in which the distal end of the cutting device projects from between the first wall and the second wall thereby extending from the cup.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the cup includes an elongate manipulation member having a proximal portion, a distal portion, and a central portion extending therebetween, wherein the central portion includes a substantially uniform cross-section.

3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the cup is configured to pivot relative to the elongate member.

4. The medical device of claim 3 , wherein a first actuator controls deployment of the cutting device.

5. The medical device of claim 3 , wherein the cutting device is a monopolar cauterizing instrument.

6. The medical device of claim 3 , further comprising an expandable member secured to a distal portion of the medical device.

7. The medical device of claim 6 , wherein the expandable member is secured to the elongate member.

8. The medical device of claim 7 , wherein the expandable member is disposed proximally of the cup.

9. The medical device of claim 3 , further comprising an expandable member secured to an elongate manipulation member.

10. The medical device of claim 3 , further comprising an elongate manipulation member extending distally from within the cup.

11. The medical device of claim 10 , further comprising a first expandable member secured to a distal portion of the elongate member.

12. The medical device of claim 11 , further comprising a second expandable member secured to the elongate manipulation member.

13. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the cutting device is a bipolar cauterizing instrument.

14. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the cup is removably secured to the distal end of the elongate member.

15. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the cup is longitudinally movable relative to a distal end of the elongate member.

16. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first wall is an outside wall of the cup and the second wall is an inside wall of the cup.

17. A method for performing a laparoscopic hysterectomy procedure, the method comprising:

inserting a medical device into a vaginal canal of a patient, the medical device comprising:

an elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween;

a cup connected to the distal end of the elongate member, the cup including a first wall and a second wall; and

a cutting device configured to extend from the cup, the cutting device having (1) a retracted configuration in which a distal end of the cutting device is disposed between the first wall and the second wall without projecting longitudinally beyond either of the first wall or the second wall; and (2) a deployed configuration in which the distal end of the cutting device projects from between the first wall and the second wall thereby extending from the cup;

positioning the cup adjacent tissue associated with one of uterine or cervical tissues;

deploying the cutting device; and

creating an incision to excise at least a uterus of the patient from surrounding tissue.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the medical device further includes a first expandable member disposed on an elongate manipulation member extending distally from within the cup at a location proximal of the cup.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising expanding the expandable member to occlude the vaginal canal.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the medical device includes a second expandable member secured to the elongate manipulation member.

21. The method of claim 17 , wherein the medical device includes an elongate manipulation member extending distally from within the cup, and prior to the step of deploying the cutting device, the method further includes pivoting the elongate manipulation member to alter a positioning of the uterus.

22. The method of claim 17 , wherein, prior to the step of deploying the cutting device, the method further includes positioning a rim of the cup against a vaginal fornice and exerting a cephalad force on the vaginal fornice.

23. The method of claim 17 , wherein creating an incision to separate at least a uterus of the patient from surrounding tissue includes rotating the cutting device.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein rotating the cutting device includes rotating the cup.

25. The method of claim 17 , wherein the cutting device is a monopolar cautery instrument.

26. The method of claim 17 , wherein the cutting device is a bipolar cautery instrument.

27. The method of claim 17 , wherein the cup is removably secured to the distal end of the elongate member.

28. The method of claim 17 , wherein the cup is longitudinally moveable relative to the distal end of the elongate member.

29. The method of claim 17 , further comprising the step of removing cervical tissue.

30. The method of claim 17 , wherein creating an incision to excise at least a uterus of the patient from surrounding tissue includes excising the uterus and a cervix of the patient.

31. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first wall is an outside wall of the cup and the second wall is an inside wall of the cup.

32. A medical device for performing a surgical procedure, the medical device comprising:

an elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween;

cup connected to the distal end of the elongate member, the cup including a first wall and a second wall;

a cutting device configured to extend from the cup, the cutting device having a retracted configuration in which a distal end of the cutting device is disposed between the first wall and the second wall without projecting longitudinally beyond either of the first wall or the second wall; and (2) a deployed configuration in which the distal end of the cutting device projects from between the first wall and the second wall thereby extending from the cup; and

an expandable member positioned on the elongate member at a location proximal of the cup.

33. The medical device of claim 32 , wherein the first wall is an outside wall of the cup and the second wall is an inside wall of the cup.
