Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure generally describe polyarylether ketones and methods of use. In some aspects, a composition includes one or more polymers of formula (IV):

Claims (52)

1. A polymer consisting of:

at least one of

 wherein each R is independently

 wherein each L is independently —CH 2 —, —(CH 3 ) 2 C—, —O—,—S—,—SO 2 — or —CO—, wherein each Q is independently —S—,—SO 2 — or —(CF 3 ) 2 C—, —O—, —(CH 3 ) 2 C—, and wherein each j is a positive integer; and

a capping agent selected from

or benzyl, wherein R′ is —H, halo, C1-C20 alkyl, or cyano, wherein the molecular weight of the polymer is between about 50 kDa and about 150 kDa.

2. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the molecular weight of the polymer is between about 90 kDa and about 110 kDa.

3. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is:

about 46 mol % of

about 5 mol % of benzyl capping agent; about 32mol % of and

and about 17 mol % of

4. The polymer of claim 3 , wherein the polymer is:

45. 58 mol % of

5.48 mol % of benzyl capping agent; 32.01 mol % of

 and 16.92 mol % of

5. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is:

about 23 mol % of

wherein m is a positive integer,

R is

j is 1,

about 29 mol % of

 n is a positive integer,

about 24 mol % of

 and

about 24 mol % of

6. A composition comprising:

(1) a fiber material; and

(2) a polymer consisting of:

at least one of

 wherein each R is independently

 wherein each L is independently —CH 2 —, —(CH 3 ) 2 C—, —O—, —S—,—SO 2 — or—CO—, wherein each Q is independently —S—, —SO 2 — or —(CF 3 ) 2 C—, —O—, —(CH 3 ) 2 C—, and wherein each j is a positive integer; and

a capping agent selected from

or benzyl, wherein R′ is —H, halo, C1-C20 alkyl, or cyano, wherein the molecular weight of the polymer is between about 50 kDa and about 120 kDa.

7. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the fiber material is selected from the group consisting of graphite, fiberglass, nylon, aramid polymers, and mixtures thereof.

8. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the polymer has a glass transition temperature between about 135° C. and about 190° C.

9. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the polymer has a melting temperature between about 200° C. and about 450° C.

10. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the molecular weight of the polymer is between about 90 kDa and about 110 kDa.

13. The composition of claim 11 , wherein R is selected from the group consisting of:

wherein each L is independently —CH 2 — or —(CH 3 ) 2 C—.

14. The composition of claim 6 , wherein a ratio of

is between about 1:1 and about 1:2.

15. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the moiety:

is greater than about 33 mol % of the molecular weight of the polymer, and n is a positive integer.

16. The composition of claim 15 , wherein the moiety:

is greater than about 50 mol % of the polymer.

17. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the polymer is a block copolymer.

18. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the polymer is a random copolymer.

19. A vehicle component including the composition of claim 6 .

20. The vehicle component of claim 19 , wherein the vehicle component is a tail cone, a panel, a coated lap joint between two or more panels, a wing-to-fuselage assembly, a structural aircraft composite, a fuselage body-joint or a wing rib-to-skin joint.
