Abstract

A fluid end having its fluid flow bores sealed without threading a retaining nut into the walls of each bore. The fluid ends may be assembled using a plurality of different kits that each comprise a fluid end body, a component, a retainer element, and a fastening system. The retainer element holds the component within each of the bores formed in the fluid end body and the fastening system secures the retainer element to the body. The fastening system comprises a plurality of externally threaded studs, washers and nuts in some embodiments. In other embodiments, the fastening system comprises a plurality of screws.

Claims (44)

1. A kit, comprising:

a fluid end body, comprising:

an external surface; and

a bore extending through the fluid end body and terminating at an opening formed in the external surface; and

a component configured for removable installation within the bore;

a retainer element engagable with the component when the component is installed within the bore; and

a fastening system configured to releasably hold the retainer element against the component when the component is installed within the bore, the fastening system comprising:

a plurality of externally threaded studs supported by the body and projecting from its external surface;

a plurality of openings formed about the periphery of the retainer element, each opening registrable with a corresponding one of the studs;

a plurality of internally threaded nuts, each nut configured for installation on a corresponding one of the studs;

an eye bolt configured to attach to an outer surface of the component;

a central opening formed in the retainer element and configured for receiving the eye bolt; and

a cable configured to extend through the eye of the eye bolt and to be attached to the external surface of the body;

in which the bore has no internal threads formed within that portion that surrounds the component when the component is installed within the bore.

2. The kit of claim 1 in which the fastening system further comprises:

a plurality of washers, each washer configured for installation on one of the studs.

3. The kit of claim 1 in which the bore is considered a second bore and the body further comprises:

a first bore extending through the body and intersecting the second bore, and further comprising:

a plunger configured for reciprocating movement within the first bore.

4. An apparatus, comprising:

the kit of claim 1 in which the component is received within the bore, the retainer element is engaged with the component, one of the studs extends through each peripheral opening of the retainer element, and each stud carries one of the nuts that engages the retainer element.

5. The kit of claim 1 in which the component has a first section having a footprint sized to cover the opening and a second section configured for removable receipt within the bore.

6. The kit of claim 5 in which the retainer element has a footprint sized to cover the first section of the component.

7. The kit of claim 5 in which the first section of the component has a plurality of notches formed about its periphery.

8. The kit of claim 5 in which the first section of the component is circular.

9. The kit of claim 5 in which the second section of the component is a plug sized to be received within the bore.

10. The kit of claim 1 in which the fluid end body further comprises an internal seat formed within the bore.

11. The kit of claim 10 in which the fastening system is further configured to releasably attach the retainer element to the seat.

12. The kit of claim 1 in which the component is a plug sized to be received within the bore.

13. The kit of claim 1 in which the retainer element is circular.

14. The kit of claim 1 in which the retainer element is rectangular.

15. The kit of claim 1 in which the retainer element and the component are formed as a single piece.

16. The kit of claim 1 in which the fluid end body further comprises an internal seat formed within the bore, in which the component is configured for engagement with the seat.

17. A kit, comprising:

a fluid end body, comprising:

an external surface; and

a bore extending through the fluid end body and terminating at an opening formed in the external surface; and

a component configured for removable installation within the bore;

a retainer element engagable with the component when the component is installed within the bore; and

a fastening system configured to releasably hold the retainer element against the component when the component is installed within the bore, the fastening system comprising:

an eye bolt configured to attach to an outer surface of the component;

a central opening formed in the retainer element and configured for receiving the eye bolt; and

a cable configured to extend through the eye of the eye bolt and to be attached to the external surface of the body;

in which the bore has no internal threads formed within that portion that surrounds the component when the component is installed within the bore.
