Abstract

A system and method for reliable and secure record keeping for Radio Access Network (RAN) capacity sharing amongst a plurality of operators using slicing methods according to 3GPP 5G specifications, wherein slicing is controlled by a RAN controller is disclosed. The record keeping system is a distributed Blockchain ledger in which a block specifies information pertaining to available, leased or purchased base station slice(s). The ledger is immutable and available to all operators through a distributed database hosted by each participant wherein each base station owner advertises its leased as well as unused base station capacity at a specific time using blocks in the Blockchain. In an embodiment, the RAN controller directly feeds the information needed to form a new block into the ledger whenever the slicing profile of a RAN changes, thereby making the ledger in complete synchronicity with the network. The information in the ledger is easily viewable by each participant using a special ledger browser interfacing the ledger, which can also be used to lease slices.

Claims (28)

1. A method comprising:

(a) slicing base station capacity of a plurality of base stations owned by at least one mobile operator into one or more slices, wherein each slice in the one or more slices are generated by a Radio Access Network (RAN) controller, each unused slice usable by another mobile operator either on a short-term basis or long-term basis, wherein the another mobile operator is different than the at least one mobile operator, and wherein each unused slice is either allocated or made available to the another mobile operator, the slicing covering: (1) a plurality of Long Term Evolution (LTE) resource blocks; (2) data throughput; and (3) a transmission power level;

(b) translating information associated with one or more slices into transactions in a block, and storing the block in a blockchain ledger and distributing the blockchain ledger to one or more peer ledgers; and

wherein information in the block is some or all attributes of a given base station slice, wherein the attributes comprises a plurality of the following: base station identifier, base station location, slice identifier, slice status (available or leased), slice leasee, slice leaser, slice QoS parameters, slice downlink and uplink capacity descriptor, slice scheduler descriptor, slice IMSI list, handover threshold, admission control, slice duration, attached MME, and lease price.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises the step of viewing transactions in the block in the form of slice information.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each slice is leased on a short-term basis or long-term basis by one or more leasees.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the block stores any of, or a combination of, the following: transactions of one slice of one base station, transactions of all slices of a base station, transactions of all slices of all base stations in a locality, transactions of all slices of all base stations of a single operator, and transactions of all base station slices of all base stations of all operators.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the block is generated either at configurable time intervals, or upon one or a group of changes in the slices.

6. A method comprising:

(a) slicing base station capacity of a plurality of base stations owned by at least one mobile operator into one or more slices, wherein each slice in the one or more slices are generated by a Radio Access Network (RAN) controller, each unused slice usable by another mobile operator either on a short-term basis or long-term basis, wherein the another mobile operator is different than the at least one mobile operator, and wherein each unused slice is either allocated or made available to the another mobile operator, the slicing covering: (1) a plurality of Long Term Evolution (LTE) resource blocks; (2) data throughput; and (3) a transmission power level;

(b) translating information associated with one or more slices into transactions in a block;

(c) storing the block in a blockchain ledger and distributing the blockchain ledger to one or more peer ledgers;

(d) viewing transactions in the block in the form of slice information, and

wherein information in the block is some or all attributes of a given base station slice, wherein the attributes comprises a plurality of the following: base station identifier, base station location, slice identifier, slice status (available or leased), slice leasee, slice leaser, slice QoS parameters, slice downlink and uplink capacity descriptor, slice scheduler descriptor, slice IMSI list, handover threshold, admission control, slice duration, attached MME, and lease price.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the block stores any of, or a combination of, the following: transactions of one slice of one base station, transactions of all slices of a base station, transactions of all slices of all base stations in a locality, transactions of all slices of all base stations of a single operator, and transactions of all base station slices of all base stations of all operators.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the block is generated either at configurable time intervals, or upon one or a group of changes in the slices.

9. A system that comprises the components of

(a) a Radio Access Network (RAN) controller slicing base station capacity of a plurality of base stations owned by at least one mobile operator into one or more slices, wherein each unused slice is usable by another mobile operator either on a short-term basis or long-term basis, and wherein the another mobile operator is different than the at least one mobile operator, and wherein each unused slice is either allocated or made available to the another mobile operator, the slicing covering: (1) a plurality of Long Term Evolution (LTE) resource blocks; (2) data throughput; and (3) a transmission power level;

(b) a distributed blockchain ledger recording slice transactions within a block wherein the blockchain ledger is distributed to all mobile operators in the system;

(c) an application, communicating with blockchain ledger, converting between slice information and transactions in the block;

(d) a ledger browser application for viewing slice information; and

wherein the information in the block is some or all attributes of a given base station slice, wherein the attributes comprises a plurality of the following: base station identifier, base station location, slice identifier, slice status (available or leased), slice leasee, slice leaser, slice QoS parameters, slice downlink and uplink capacity descriptor, slice scheduler descriptor, slice IMSI list, handover threshold, admission control, slice duration, attached MME, and lease price.
