Abstract

A golf club head that is capable of preserving the metallic acoustic signature of an entirely metallic golf club head all while utilizing a lightweight composite material is disclosed herein. More specifically, the golf club head in accordance with the present invention creates a frontal acoustic chamber in conjunction with a rear weight saving chamber via a panel member barrier is disclosed.

Claims (35)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a frontal acoustic chamber located at a front side of said golf club head made out of a first material having a first volume, and

a rear weight saving chamber located rearward of said frontal acoustic chamber at least partially made out of a second material having a second volume,

wherein said frontal acoustic chamber and said rear weight saving chamber are separated by a panel member that bifurcates said golf club head by connecting to a crown portion and a sole portion,

wherein a pressure release hole having an area of about 2,000 mm 2 to about 2,400 mm 2 is defined in said panel member,

wherein said second material has a lower density than said first material, and

wherein said golf club head has a Front to Rear Volume Ratio of less than about 0.50, said Front to Rear Volume Ratio defined as said first volume of said frontal acoustic chamber divided by said second volume of said rear weight saving chamber.

2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said Front to Rear Volume Ratio is less than about 0.40.

3. The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein said Front to Rear Volume Ratio is less than about 0.35.

4. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said frontal acoustic chamber has a volume of less than about 230 cc, and said rear weight saving chamber has a volume of greater than about 230 cc.

5. The golf club head of claim 4 , wherein said frontal acoustic chamber has a volume of less than about 150 cc, and said rear weight saving chamber has a volume of greater than about 310 cc.

6. The golf club head of claim 5 , wherein said frontal acoustic chamber has a volume of less than about 100 cc, and said rear weight saving chamber has a volume of greater than about 360 cc.

7. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said panel member has a thickness of between about 0.3 mm to about 0.7 mm.

8. The golf club head of claim 7 , wherein said panel member has a thickness of between about 0.4 mm to about 0.6 mm.

9. The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein said panel member has a thickness of about 0.5 mm.

10. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said golf club head produces a sound that has a Critical Time T critical of greater than about 0.01 second and less than about 0.02 second; said Critical Time T critical is defined as the amount of time it takes said sound to oscillate from a peak amplitude A max to a point of 10% of said peak amplitude A max .

11. The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein said Critical Time T critical is greater than about 0.015 second and less than about 0.02 second.

12. The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein said Critical Time T critical is greater than about 0.0175 second and less than about 0.02 second.

13. A golf club head comprising:

a frontal acoustic chamber located at a front side of said golf club head made out of a first material having a first volume, and

a rear weight saving chamber located rearward of said frontal acoustic chamber at least partially made out of a second material having a second volume,

wherein said second material has a lower density than said first material,

wherein said frontal acoustic chamber and said rear weight saving chamber are separated by a panel member that bifurcates said golf club head by connecting to a crown portion and a sole portion, and

wherein said panel member comprises a plurality of sub-panel members,

wherein each of said sub-panel members extends substantially horizontally in a heel-toe direction and is substantially perpendicular to a vertical plane extending through a center of a striking face of the golf club in a front-rear direction.

14. The golf club head of claim 13 , wherein said plurality of panel members comprises:

an upper sub-panel member,

a middle sub-panel member, and

a lower sub-panel member,

wherein each of said upper sub-panel member, said middle sub-panel member, and said lower sub-panel member are placed at different angles relative to said striking face.

15. The golf club head of claim 14 , wherein said panel member further comprises a plurality of two or more pressure release holes.

16. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein said plurality of two or more pressure release holes are located within a middle sub-panel member portion of said panel member.

17. The golf club head of claim 14 , wherein said upper sub-panel member and said middle panel member form an angle θ of between about 10 degrees to about 15 degrees, and said lower sub-panel member and said middle panel member form an angle β of between about 16 degrees to about 20 degrees.

18. The golf club head of claim 17 , wherein said upper sub-panel member and said middle panel member form an angle θ of between about 12 degrees to about 14 degrees, and said lower sub-panel member and said middle panel member form an angle β of between about 17 degrees to about 19 degrees.

19. The golf club head of claim 18 , wherein said upper sub-panel member and said middle panel member form an angle θ of about 13 degrees, and said lower sub-panel member and said middle panel member form an angle β of about 18 degrees.
