Abstract

The present invention relates generally to glass compositions incorporating rare earth oxides (RE 2 O 3 ). In one embodiment, a glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprises 51-70 wt. % SiO 2 , 12.5-22 wt. % Al 2 O 3 , 0-20 wt. % CaO, 0-11 wt. % MgO, 0.2-1 wt. % Fe 2 O 3 , 0.05 or greater wt. % RE 2 O 3 , and greater than 1 wt. % MnO x . In another embodiment, a glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprises 51-70 wt. % SiO 2 , 12.5-22 wt. % Al 2 O 3 , 0-20 wt. % CaO, 0-11 wt. % MgO, 0.2-1 wt. % Fe 2 O 3 , 0.05 or greater wt. % RE 2 O 3 , 0-4 wt. % BaO, 0-4 wt. % SrO, and 0-5.5 wt. % ZnO, wherein the sum of BaO+SrO+ZnO is greater than about 2 wt. %. In another embodiment, a glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprises 51-70 wt. % SiO 2 , 12.5-22 wt. % Al 2 O 3 , 0-20 wt. % CaO, 0-11 wt. % MgO, 0.2-1 wt. % Fe 2 O 3 , 0.05 or greater wt. % RE 2 O 3 , and from greater than 0 to 2.5 wt. % Cu 2 O. In another embodiment, a glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprises 51-70 wt. % SiO 2 , 12.5-22 wt. % Al 2 O 3 , 0-20 wt. % CaO, 0-12.5 wt. % MgO, 0.2-1 wt. % Fe 2 O 3 , 0.05 or greater wt. % RE 2 O 3 , and at least one additional feature selected from the group consisting of: La 2 O 3 is present in an amount greater than about 2 weight percent, CaO is present in an amount less than about 2 weight percent, a MgO/CaO ratio less than about 1, and a SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio greater than about 4. The glass compositions can be used to form glass fibers which can be incorporated into a variety of other fiber glass products (e.g., strands, rovings, fabrics, etc.) and incorporated into various composites.

Claims (38)

1. An article of manufacture comprising a glass composition comprising:

weight percent;

K 2 O

weight percent;

TiO 2

weight percent;

weight percent;

P 2 O 5

weight percent;

Fe 2 O 3

0-1

weight percent;

Li 2 O in an amount greater than 0 weight percent and up to 2 weight percent; and

at least one rare earth oxide is present in an amount greater than 1 weight percent, wherein the article of manufacture is substantially free of Y 2 O 3 .

2. The article of manufacture of claim 1 , wherein the article is a roving.

3. The article of manufacture of claim 1 , wherein the article is a yarn.

4. The article of manufacture of claim 1 , wherein the article is a fabric.

5. The article of manufacture of claim 4 , wherein the fabric is woven.

6. The article of manufacture of claim 1 , wherein the article is a composite.
