Abstract

A method of subcutaneously injecting and anchoring a device to a bone, a muscle, and/or a tissue in a patient, the device having a clip configured to anchor the device to the bone, the muscle, or the tissue, includes making an incision in the patient. An instrument pre-loaded with the device is inserted through the incision. The instrument is advanced to the bone, the muscle, and/or the tissue upon which the device is to be anchored. A clip of the device is pushed onto the bone, the muscle, and/or the tissue using the instrument. The device is anchored to the bone, the muscle, and/or the tissue using the clip on the device.

Claims (56)

1. A method of subcutaneously injecting and anchoring a device to a bone in a patient, the device having a clip configured to anchor the device to the bone, the method comprising:

making an incision in the patient;

inserting an instrument pre-loaded with the device through the incision;

advancing the instrument to the bone upon which the device is to be anchored;

pushing the clip of the device onto the bone using the instrument, including pushing a top portion of the clip of the device on top of the bone and a housing of the device below the bone; and

anchoring the device to the bone using the clip on the device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein making the incision in the patient comprises making the incision below a xiphoid process and/or a sternum of the patient.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein advancing the instrument to the bone upon which the device is to be anchored comprises advancing the instrument to the xiphoid process and/or the sternum.

4. The method of claim 3 , and further comprising:

removing tissue from the xiphoid process and/or the sternum using a blade on the instrument and/or a blade separate from the instrument.

5. The method of claim 3 , and further comprising:

positioning the instrument to deploy the device onto the xiphoid process and/or the sternum.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the bone includes pushing the clip of the device onto the xiphoid process and/or the sternum.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the bone includes pushing the top portion of the clip of the device on top of the xiphoid process and/or the sternum and the housing of the device below the xiphoid process and/or the sternum.

8. The method of claim 3 , wherein anchoring the device to the bone using the clip on the device includes anchoring the device to the xiphoid process and/or the sternum using the clip on the device.

9. The method of claim 1 , and further comprising:

removing the instrument from the incision in the patient.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the clip of the device has a spring portion extending between the top portion of the clip and a bottom portion of the clip.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the spring portion has a spring bias that puts tension on the top portion of the clip to anchor the device to the xiphoid process and/or the sternum.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the bone using the instrument includes pushing a slider of the instrument forward to deploy the device from the instrument.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the device has a guide that moves through a guide track of the instrument when the device is pushed through the instrument.

14. The method of claim 1 , and further comprising:

pushing a prong of the device through tissue below the xiphoid process and the sternum of the patient.

15. The method of claim 1 , and further comprising:

securing the device to the bone using sutures, tines, pins, and/or screws that extend through openings in the clip.

16. A method of subcutaneously injecting and anchoring a device to a bone in a patient, the device having a clip configured to anchor the device to the bone, the method comprising:

making an incision in the patient;

inserting an instrument pre-loaded with the device through the incision;

advancing the instrument to the bone upon which the device is to be anchored;

pushing the clip of the device onto the bone using the instrument without piercing the bone, wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the bone includes pushing a top portion of the clip of the device on top of the bone and a housing of the device below the bone; and

anchoring the device to the bone using the clip on the device.

17. The method of claim 16 , and further comprising:

pushing a prong of the device through tissue below the xiphoid process and the sternum of the patient.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the bone includes pushing the clip of the device onto the xiphoid process and/or the sternum.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein anchoring the device to the bone using the clip on the device includes anchoring the device to the xiphoid process and/or the sternum using the clip on the device.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the clip of the device has a spring portion extending between a top portion and a bottom portion, wherein the spring portion has a spring bias that puts tension on the top portion of the clip to anchor the device to the bone.

21. A method of subcutaneously injecting and anchoring a device to a xiphoid process and/or a sternum in a patient, the device having a clip configured to anchor the device to the xiphoid process and/or the sternum, the method comprising:

making an incision in the patient;

inserting an instrument pre-loaded with the device through the incision;

advancing the instrument to the xiphoid process and/or the sternum upon which the device is to be anchored;

pushing the clip of the device onto the xiphoid process and/or the sternum using the instrument, wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the xiphoid process and/or the sternum includes pushing a top portion of the clip of the device on top of the xiphoid process and/or the sternum and a housing of the device below the xiphoid process and/or the sternum; and

anchoring the device to the xiphoid process and/or the sternum using the clip on the device.

22. The method of claim 21 , and further comprising:

pushing a prong of the device through tissue below the xiphoid process and the sternum of the patient.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the clip of the device has a spring portion extending between a top portion and a bottom portion.

24. The method of claim 21 , wherein the spring portion has a spring bias that puts tension on the top portion of the clip to anchor the device to the xiphoid process and/or the sternum.

25. A method of subcutaneously injecting and anchoring a device to a bone in a patient, the device having a clip configured to anchor the device to the bone, the method comprising:

making an incision in the patient;

inserting an instrument pre-loaded with the device through the incision;

advancing the instrument to the bone upon which the device is to be anchored;

pushing the clip of the device onto the bone using the instrument, wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the bone includes pushing a top portion of the clip of the device on top of the bone and a housing of the device below the bone;

pushing a stiff prong extending from the device with an electrode at a distal end of the stiff prong into contact with an organ and/or a second tissue as the clip of the device is pushed onto the bone; and

anchoring the device to the bone using the clip on the device.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the bone includes pushing the clip of the device onto a xiphoid process and/or a sternum.

27. The method of claim 25 , wherein pushing the stiff prong extending from the device into contact with the organ and/or the second tissue includes pushing the stiff prong below a xiphoid process and a sternum of the patient.

28. The method of claim 25 , wherein pushing the clip of the device onto the bone includes pushing a top portion of the clip of the device on top of a xiphoid process and/or a sternum and a housing of the device below a xiphoid process and/or a sternum.
