Abstract

A parallel redundant integrated-circuit system includes an input connection, an output connection and first and second active circuits. The first active circuit includes one or more first integrated circuits and has an input connected to the input connection and an output connected to the output connection. The second active circuit includes one or more second integrated circuits and is redundant to the first active circuit, has an input connected to the input connection, and has an output connected to the output connection. The second integrated circuits are separate and distinct from the first integrated circuits.

Claims (44)

1. A parallel redundant integrated-circuit system, comprising:

a system substrate;

a common input connection, a common output connection, a common power connection, and a common ground connection;

a first active circuit, the first active circuit directly connected to the common power connection, the common ground connection, and the common input connection; and

a second active circuit, the second active circuit directly connected to the common power connection, the common ground connection, and the common input connection, wherein the second active circuit is redundant to the first active circuit with the first active circuit and the second active circuit substantially identically electrically connected to operate in parallel in response to the common input connection, so that the first and second active circuits are substantially identically electrically connected to the common input connection and to the common output connection, and

wherein the first active circuit comprises a separate, distinct, and independent first substrate disposed on the system substrate and the second active circuit comprises a separate, distinct, and independent second substrate disposed on the system substrate,

wherein the first substrate is different from the second substrate,

wherein the first active circuit comprises a first driver circuit electrically connected to a first light emitter, and the second active circuit comprises a second driver circuit electrically connected to a second light emitter,

wherein the first light emitter comprises a separate, distinct, and independent first light emitter substrate and the second light emitter has a separate, distinct, and independent second light emitter substrate, and the system substrate, the first substrate, the second substrate, the first light emitter substrate, and the second light emitter substrate are different from each other.

The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein the common input connection, the common power connection, and the common ground connection are disposed on the system substrate within the first active circuit, within the second active circuit, or between the first active circuit and the second active circuit.

3. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein the first active circuit and the second active circuit are disposed directly on the system substrate.

The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein the first active circuit is disposed on a first pixel substrate and the second active circuit is disposed on a second pixel substrate different from the first pixel substrate and the first pixel substrate and the second pixel substrate are disposed on the system substrate.

5. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein the first light emitter is a first light-emitting diode and the second light emitter is a second light-emitting diode.

6. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 5 , wherein the first light-emitting diode is an inorganic light-emitting diode and the second light-emitting diode is an inorganic light-emitting diode.

7. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein the first driver circuit is an integrated circuit and the second driver circuit is an integrated circuit.

8. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the first driver circuit, the second driver circuit, the first light emitter, and the second light emitter is an unpackaged die.

9. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , comprising:

a first electrical connection electrically connecting the first driver circuit to the first light emitter; and

a second electrical connection electrically connecting the second driver circuit to the second light emitter, wherein the second electrical connection is separate from the first electrical connection.

10. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 9 , wherein the first driver circuit, the first light emitter, the second driver circuit, the second light emitter, the first electrical connection, and the second electrical connection are each disposed in or on the system substrate.

11. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein the common input connection comprises a plurality of wires.

12. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 11 , wherein each input connection of the first active circuit is electrically connected in common with a corresponding input connection of the second active circuit.

13. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein the common input connection is a signal connection.

14. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first light emitter is a first red-light emitter that emits red light and the first active circuit is further electrically connected to a first green-light emitter operable to emit green light and a first blue-light emitter operable to emit blue light,

the first driver circuit comprises a first red driver circuit operable to drive the first red-light emitter, a first green driver circuit operable to drive the first green-light emitter, and a first blue driver circuit operable to drive the first blue-light emitter,

the second light emitter is a second red-light emitter that emits red light and the second active circuit is further electrically connected to a second green-light emitter operable to emit green light and a second blue-light emitter operable to emit blue light, and

the second driver circuit comprises a second red driver circuit operable to drive the second red-light emitter, a second green driver circuit operable to drive the second green-light emitter, and a second blue driver circuit operable to drive the second blue-light emitter.

15. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , comprising:

a third active circuit, the third active circuit directly connected to the common power connection, the common ground connection, and the common input connection, the third active circuit redundant to the first active circuit and redundant to the second active circuit with the first active circuit, the second active circuit, and the third active circuit substantially identically electrically connected to operate in parallel in response to the common input connection.

The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of different input connections and a plurality of pixels, each of the pixels connected to the common power connection and the common ground connection, wherein the pixels of the plurality of pixels are connected to different input connections than the common input connection and the first active circuit, the second active circuit, and the plurality of pixels are arranged in an array to form a display.

17. A parallel redundant integrated-circuit system, comprising:

a system substrate;

a common input connection, a common output connection, a common power connection, and a common ground connection;

a first pixel comprising a first active circuit, the first active circuit directly connected to the common power connection, the common ground connection, and the common input connection; and

a second pixel comprising a second active circuit, the second active circuit directly connected to the common power connection, the common ground connection, and the common input connection, wherein the second active circuit is redundant to the first active circuit with the first active circuit and the second active circuit substantially identically electrically connected to operate in parallel in response to the common input connection, so that the first and second active circuits are substantially identically electrically connected to the common input connection and to the common output connection, and

wherein the first active circuit comprises a separate, distinct, and independent first substrate disposed on the system substrate and the second active circuit comprises a separate, distinct, and independent second substrate disposed on the system substrate,

wherein the first substrate is different from the second substrate,

wherein the first pixel comprises a separate, distinct, and independent first pixel substrate disposed on the system substrate and the first pixel substrate is different from the first substrate, the second substrate, and the system substrate,

wherein the second pixel comprises a separate, distinct, and independent second pixel substrate disposed on the system substrate, and the second pixel substrate is different from the first substrate, the first pixel substrate, the second substrate, and the system substrate,

wherein the first active circuit is disposed on the first pixel substrate and the second active circuit is disposed on the second pixel substrate.

18. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 17 , wherein the first active circuit comprises a first driver circuit electrically connected to a first output device, and the second active circuit comprises a second driver circuit electrically connected to a second output device.

19. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 18 , wherein the first output device is a first light emitter and the second output device is a second light emitter.

20. The parallel redundant integrated-circuit system of claim 19 , wherein the first light emitter comprises a separate, distinct, and independent first light emitter substrate disposed on the first pixel substrate and the second light emitter comprises a separate, distinct, and independent second light emitter substrate disposed on the second pixel substrate.
