Abstract

Aspects of the disclosure relate to the treatment, prevention or alleviation of conditions such as fibrosis in a subject. In some embodiments, the treatment, prevention or alleviation of fibrosis in a subject through the administration of an agent capable of inhibiting the action of Interleukin 11 (IL-11) is disclosed.

Claims (14)

1. A method of treating a disease or condition characterised by fibrosis of an organ of the cardiovascular system in a human subject, the method comprising administering to the human subject in need of treatment a therapeutically effective amount of an Interleukin 11 receptor α (IL-11Rα) antibody which is capable of inhibiting Interleukin 11 (IL-11) mediated signaling.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the disease or condition is characterised by fibrosis of the heart or blood vessels.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the disease or condition is characterised by fibrosis of the atrium and/or ventricles of the heart.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the disease or condition is associated with dysfunction of the musculature or electrical properties of the heart, or thickening of the walls or valves of the heart.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the disease or condition is selected from the group consisting of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), fibrosis of the atrium, atrial fibrillation, fibrosis of the ventricle, ventricular fibrillation, myocardial fibrosis, Brugada syndrome, myocarditis, endomyocardial fibrosis, myocardial infarction, fibrotic vascular disease, hypertensive heart disease, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), atherosclerosis, and varicose veins.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the antibody is capable of inhibiting or reducing the binding of IL-11 to an IL-11 receptor.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises administering said antibody to a subject in which IL-11 or IL-11R expression is upregulated.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises administering said antibody to a subject in which IL-11 or IL-11R expression has been determined to be upregulated.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises determining whether IL-11 or IL-11R expression is upregulated in the subject and administering said antibody to a subject in which IL-11 or IL-11R expression is upregulated.

10. A method of treating a disease or condition characterised by fibrosis, selected from the group consisting of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), fibrosis of the atrium, atrial fibrillation, fibrosis of the ventricle, ventricular fibrillation, myocardial fibrosis, Brugada syndrome, myocarditis, endomyocardial fibrosis, myocardial infarction, fibrotic vascular disease, hypertensive heart disease, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), atherosclerosis, and varicose veins in a human subject, the method comprising administering to the human subject in need of treatment a therapeutically effective amount of an Interleukin 11 receptor α (IL-11Rα) antibody which is capable of inhibiting Interleukin 11 (IL-11) mediated signaling.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the antibody is capable of inhibiting or reducing the binding of IL-11 to an IL-11 receptor.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the method comprises administering said antibody to a subject in which IL-11 or IL-11R expression is upregulated.

13. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the method comprises administering said antibody to a subject in which IL-11 or IL-11R expression has been determined to be upregulated.

14. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the method comprises determining whether IL-11 or IL-11R expression is upregulated in the subject and administering said antibody to a subject in which IL-11 or IL-11R expression is upregulated.
