Abstract

Formulation systems usable for fabricating a three-dimensional object made of a polyamide-containing material, by three-dimensional 3D inkjet printing, and methods and systems utilizing same, are provided. The formulation systems are formed of at least a first and second model formulations containing a lactam and a catalyst for inducing anionic ring opening polymerization of the lactam in the first formulation, and an activator for promoting anionic ring opening polymerization of the lactam in the second formulation, and are further characterized as: including in the first and/or second formulation a compound capable of increasing a rate of said polymerization upon exposure to said curing energy; including as an activator a lactam-blocked polyisocyanate; and/or as including in the first model formulation at least one material capable of reducing a melting point of said first model formulation. Formulation systems usable at a selected ratio are also provided.

Claims (17)

1. A method of fabricating an object which comprises at least one polyamide material, by three-dimensional inkjet printing, the method comprising:

receiving three-dimensional printing data corresponding to the shape of the object;

dispensing droplets of at least a first model formulation and a second model formulation in layers, on a receiving medium, according to said printing data; and

exposing said layers to a curing energy, said curing energy comprising heat,

wherein said first model formulation comprises a lactam and a catalyst for inducing anionic ring opening polymerization of said lactam, and said second model formulation comprises an activator for promoting said anionic ring opening polymerization of said lactam,

and wherein at least one of said first and second model formulations further comprises a compound capable of increasing a rate of said polymerization upon exposure to said curing energy,

wherein:

said activator is or comprises a non-blocked polyisocyanate; and

said compound capable of increasing said polymerization rate is a multifunctional polyether amine having a molecular weight of at least 1000 grams/mol,

and wherein the method further comprises selecting a ratio A:B of said first model formulation and said second model formulation, wherein A represents the part by weight of said first model formulation and B represents a part by weight of said second formulation; and dispensing said droplets in accordance with said ratio,

wherein said ratio ranges from about 1.5:1 to about 5:1,

thereby fabricating the object.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

said ratio is about 4:1.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting a ratio of said first model formulation and said second model formulation, wherein for at least one region of the object, said dispensing of said droplets is selected to form voxel blocks, wherein, for each block, a ratio between a number of voxels of said first composition in said block and a number of voxels of said second composition in said block corresponds to said selected ratio.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first model formulation further comprises at least one material selected for reducing a melting point of said formulation.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first model formulation is such that features a melting point lower than 68° C., or lower than 65° C., or lower than 62° C., or lower than 60° C.
