Abstract

There is provided a method for providing edge node ( 110 ) fault management and bandwidth, (BW), control for transmission of a data stream in a packet-based network. The method comprises adaptively transmitting a data stream (DS) by controlling an outgoing data stream being transmitted to one or more client devices ( 151, 152, 153 ) by analyzing at least one data stream characteristics of a corresponding received data stream (DS 1 , DS 2 , DS 3 ) of the one or more receiving client devices ( 151, 152, 153 ), and providing a transmission strategy for the outgoing data stream based on said analyzed data stream characteristics. Thereby accurate adjustment of consumed (BW) and an associated recovery scheme, i.e. FEC and/or retransmission, to maintain highest achievable performance when it comes to video quality and also affect on other services, are provided.

Claims (19)

1. A method, comprising:

streaming, from a streaming edge server, a live video as a live video stream to each client device of a plurality of client devices;

identifying a group of two or more client devices of the plurality of client devices that are connected to a common network resource, wherein the common network resource includes a common base station or aggregation network;

receiving, by a control server that is in communication with the streaming edge server, analyzer data from each client device in the group indicating a number of times that each client device in the group has requested retransmission of a portion of the live video stream;

determining, by the control server, that a rate at which a number of retransmission requests are collectively received from all of the two or more client devices in the group during the portion of the live video stream exceeds a threshold rate of retransmission requests;

instructing, by the control server, each client device in the group to request retransmission of only audio and I-frames of the live video stream; and

instructing, by the control server, the streaming edge server to reduce a highest selectable bitrate of the live video stream to each client device in the group.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

instructing, by the control server, each client device in the group to accept a growing buffer based on either repeating video frames of the live video stream or slowing a playout clock of the client device in an intermediate time of reducing the highest selectable bitrate of the live video stream.

3. A communication network, the communication network comprising:

a streaming edge server and a control server that is in communication with the streaming edge server, the streaming edge server and the control server each including a respective at least one memory that stores respective computer-executable instructions and a respective at least one processor configured to access the respective at least one memory and execute the respective computer-executable instructions such that the streaming edge server and the control server cause the communication network to:

stream, from the streaming edge server, a live video as a live video stream to each client device of a plurality of client devices;

identify a group of two or more client devices of the plurality of client devices that are connected to a common network resource, wherein the common network resource includes a common base station or aggregation network;

receive, by the control server that is in communication with the streaming edge server, analyzer data from each client device in the group indicating a number of times that each client device in the group has requested retransmission of a portion of the live video stream;

determine, by the control server, that a rate at which a number of retransmission requests are collectively received from all of the two or more client devices in the group during the portion of the live video stream exceeds a threshold rate of retransmission requests;

instruct, by the control server, each client device in the group to request retransmission of only audio and I-frames of the live video stream; and

instruct, by the control server, the streaming edge server to reduce a highest selectable bitrate of the live video stream to each client device in the group.

4. The communication network according to claim 3 , wherein the streaming edge server and the control server are further configured to cause the communication network to

instruct, by the control server, each client device in the group to accept a growing buffer based on either repeating video frames of the live video stream or slowing a playout clock of the client device, is performed in an intermediate time of reducing the highest selectable bitrate of the live video stream.
