Abstract

An injector for delivery of a pharmaceutical composition. The injector includes a cylinder extending along a longitudinal axis, the cylinder having an inner wall, an outer wall, and an outlet at an outlet end opposite an actuating end, a piston assembly comprising a compressible section between an actuating piston element and a passive piston element, which piston elements abut the inner wall of the cylinder at abutting interfaces thereby sealing the compressible section when the piston assembly is inserted in the cylinder, the compressible section comprising a compressible fluid and a resilient frame linking the actuating piston element to the passive piston element. The injector is suited for pre-filled injectors allowing long term storage of protein based pharmaceutical compositions.

Claims (36)

1 . An injector for delivery of a pharmaceutical composition, the injector comprising;

a cylinder extending along a longitudinal axis, the cylinder having an inner wall, an outer wall, and an outlet at an outlet end opposite an actuating end;

a piston assembly comprising a compressible section between an actuating piston element and a passive piston element, which piston elements abut the inner wall of the cylinder at abutting interfaces thereby sealing the compressible section when the piston assembly is inserted in the cylinder, the compressible section comprising a compressible fluid and a resilient frame linking the actuating piston element to the passive piston element, the resilient frame being made from an elastic polymer or from an elastic metal and has a volumetric fraction in the range of 5% to 90% of the volume of the compressible section.

2 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein the axial length of the compressible section is in the range of 25% to 90% of a total axial length of the piston assembly in a relaxed state.

3 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein the elastic polymer is a thermoplastic elastomer having a Shore A hardness in the range of 50 to 90.

4 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein the resilient frame has an axial length in the range of 30% to 70% of a total length of the piston assembly, and the resilient frame has a volumetric fraction of the compressible section in the range of 10% to 70%.

5 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the actuating piston element, the passive piston element, the resilient frame, or the actuating piston element are made from a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).

6 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the actuating piston element, the passive piston element, or the actuating piston element have a Shore A hardness in the range of 50 to 90.

7 . The injector according to claim 5 , wherein the actuating piston element, the passive piston element and the resilient frame are injection moulded as a single piece.

8 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein the piston assembly is symmetrical with respect to an actuating surface of the actuating piston element compared to an outlet surface of the passive piston element.

9 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein the injector comprises a piston rod, and the actuating piston element comprises an engagement device for engaging a complementary engagement device of the piston rod.

14 . The injector according to claim 6 , wherein the injector does not comprise a lubricant.

15 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein the cylinder is made from glass.

16 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the actuating piston element, the passive piston element or the resilient frame comprise one or more stabilising fins

17 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein the cylinder has an inner diameter in the range of 2 mm to 10 mm.

18 . The injector according to claim 1 , wherein the cylinder is prefilled with a pharmaceutical composition.

19 . An injector for delivery of a pharmaceutical composition, the injector comprising;

a cylinder extending along a longitudinal axis, the cylinder comprising:

an inner wall;

an outer wall;

an actuating end;

an outlet end opposite the actuating end;

an outlet at the outlet end;

a piston assembly comprising:

an actuating piston element;

a passive piston element;

a compressible section positioned between the actuating piston element and the passive piston element, the compressible section comprising a compressible fluid;

a resilient frame linking the actuating piston element to the passive piston element, the resilient frame being made from an elastic polymer or from an elastic metal and having a volumetric fraction in the range of 5% to 90% of a volume of the compressible section;

wherein the actuating piston element and the passive piston element abut the inner wall of the cylinder at abutting interfaces thereby sealing the compressible section when the piston assembly is inserted in the cylinder.

20 . The injector according to claim 19 , wherein the axial length of the compressible section is in the range of 25% to 90% of a total axial length of the piston assembly in a relaxed state.

21 . The injector according to claim 19 , wherein the elastic polymer is a thermoplastic elastomer having a Shore A hardness in the range of 50 to 90.

22 . The injector according to claim 19 , wherein the resilient frame has an axial length in the range of 30% to 70% of a total length of the piston assembly, and the resilient frame has a volumetric fraction of the compressible section in the range of 10% to 70%.
