Abstract

A system and method of maintaining a tool position and orientation for a computer-assisted medical device include a device with an articulated structure including a plurality of joints and a control unit. The articulated structure is configured to support a tool distal to the joints. The control unit is configured to determine an initial position and orientation of the tool prior to movement of a first joint, determine, while the first joint is moving, a current position and orientation of the tool, determine a difference between the current and the initial position and orientation, and drive at least a second joint based on the difference to maintain a position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation. In some embodiments, the position and orientation of the tool are maintained relative to a reference coordinate frame based on a cause of the moving of the first joint.

Claims (41)

1. A computer-assisted medical device, the device comprising:

an articulated structure comprising a plurality of joints, the articulated structure configured to support a tool distal to the plurality of joints; and

a control unit coupled to the articulated structure;

wherein the control unit is configured to:

determine an initial position and orientation of the tool prior to movement of a first joint of the plurality of joints;

determine, while the first joint is moving, a current position and orientation of the tool;

determine a difference between the current position and orientation and the initial position and orientation; and

drive at least a second joint of the plurality of joints based on the difference to maintain a position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the articulated structure is configured to be coupled to a patient, and the initial position and orientation and the current position and orientation are determined relative to a reference coordinate frame associated with a top of a table on which the patient is positioned.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit further maintains the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation relative to a reference coordinate frame based on a cause of the moving of the first joint.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein when the moving of the first joint is due to movement of a patient coupled to the articulated structure, the control unit further maintains the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation relative to a reference coordinate frame associated with a remote center of the articulated structure.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein when the moving of the first joint is due to controlled motion of the articulated structure, the control unit further maintains the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation relative to a reference coordinate frame fixed relative to a world coordinate frame of the computer-assisted medical device.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein when the moving of the first joint is due to manual repositioning of the articulated structure, the control unit further maintains the position and orientation of the tool relative to a reference coordinate frame fixed relative to a world coordinate frame of the computer-assisted medical device.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein when the moving of the first joint is due to motion induced by a collision of the articulated structure, the control unit further maintains the position and orientation of the tool relative to a reference coordinate frame fixed relative to a world coordinate frame of the computer-assisted medical device.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein when the moving of the first joint is due to release of a brake or lock of the first joint, the control unit further maintains the position and orientation of the tool relative to a reference coordinate frame fixed relative to a world coordinate frame of the computer-assisted medical device.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first joint is a non-actuated joint.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further configured to stop maintaining the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation in response to determining that the second joint is at a range of motion limit.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further configured to unlock a third joint of the plurality of joints, wherein unlocking the third joint reduces an amount the second joint is driven in order to maintain the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further configured to stop maintaining the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation in response to one or more of:

manual intervention of an operator;

detection of a disengagement of the operator with an operator workstation;

detection of a position tracking error in the computer-assisted medical device; or

detection of a system fault.

13. A method of compensating for motion in a computer-assisted medical device comprising an articulated structure, the method comprising:

determining an initial position and orientation of a tool of the computer-assisted medical device; and

using at least a first joint of the articulated structure to maintain a position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation during movement of a second joint of an articulated structure proximal to the tool by:

determining a current position and orientation of the tool;

determining a difference between the current position and orientation and the initial position and orientation; and

driving at least the first joint based on the difference to maintain a position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein driving at least the first joint comprises maintaining the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation relative to a reference coordinate frame based on a cause of the movement of the second joint.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein when the movement of the second joint is due to movement of a patient coupled to the articulated structure, driving at least the first joint comprises maintaining the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation relative to a reference coordinate frame associated with a remote center of the articulated structure.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein when the movement of the second joint is due to controlled motion of the articulated structure, manual repositioning of the articulated structure, motion induced by a collision of the articulated structure, or release of a brake or lock of the second joint, driving at least the first joint comprises maintaining the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation relative to a reference coordinate frame fixed relative to a world coordinate frame of the computer-assisted medical device.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: stopping maintaining the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation in response to determining that the first joint is at a range of motion limit.

18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: unlocking a third joint of the articulated structure, wherein unlocking the third joint reduces an amount the first joint is driven in order to maintain the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation.

19. A non-transitory machine-readable medium comprising a plurality of machine-readable instructions which when executed by one or more processors associated with a medical device comprising an articulated structure are adapted to cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:

determining an initial position and orientation of a tool of the medical device; and

using at least a first joint of the articulated structure to maintain a position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation during movement of a second joint of an articulated structure proximal to the tool by:

determining a current position and orientation of the tool;

determining a difference between the current position and orientation and the initial position and orientation; and

driving at least the first joint based on the difference to maintain a position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein driving at least the first joint comprises maintaining the position and orientation of the tool at the initial position and orientation relative to a reference coordinate frame based on a cause of the movement of the second joint.
