Abstract

Multi-layer cushion supports are described which may generally comprise a first support having a first contact surface for contacting a portion of a body and a second surface opposite to the first surface, the first support defining a central chamber and a peripheral chamber surrounding the central chamber, wherein the first support is filled with a first gas or liquid and a second support attached to the first support along the first contact surface. The second support may be filled with a second gas or liquid which is relatively more viscous than the first gas or liquid. In particular, the first support may be filled with a volume of air and the second support may be filled with oil which is less than the volume of air.

Claims (24)

1. A multi-layer cushion support, comprising:

a first layer and a second layer opposite to and attached to the first layer, defining a central chamber having edges and at least one peripheral chamber adjacent to at least a portion of the edges of the central chamber, wherein the central chamber and the at least one peripheral chamber are filled with a first gas or liquid;

first guides formed between the first and second layer, wherein the first guides start from a first non-edge position between the first and second layer and end at a second non-edge position between the respective first or second layer;

a third layer, smaller than the second layer and attached to the second layer, defining a secondary chamber, wherein the secondary chamber is filled with a second gas or liquid which is more viscous than the first gas or liquid; and

second guides formed between the second and third layer, wherein the second guides start from a first non-edge position on the third layer and end at a second non-edge position on the third layer, and wherein the second guides are located within a periphery formed by the first guides.

2. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 wherein the multi-layer cushion support is configured to adjust an overall volume in response to a patient body.

3. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 wherein the multi-layer cushion support is configured for positioning upon a platform.

4. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 wherein the multi-layer cushion support is configured to provide a cooling or heating therapy.

5. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 wherein the first gas or liquid comprises air.

6. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 wherein the second gas or liquid comprises oil.

7. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 wherein the central chamber and the at least one peripheral chamber are in fluid communication with one another via one or more passageways.

8. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 wherein the first guides define one or more passageways between the central chamber and the at least one peripheral chamber.

9. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 wherein the first guides define corners having gaps therebetween.

10. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 1 further comprising a foam layer positioned adjacent to the second layer.

11. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 10 further comprising a cover configured to envelop the first layer, the second layer, and the foam layer.

12. A multi-layer cushion support, comprising:

a first layer and a second layer opposite to and attached to the first layer, defining a central chamber having edges and a peripheral chamber surrounding the central chamber, wherein the central chamber and the peripheral chamber are filled with a first gas or liquid;

first guides formed between the first and second layer, wherein the first guides start from a first non-edge position on the first or second layer and end at a second non-edge position on the respective first or second layer;

a third layer, smaller than the second layer and attached to the second layer, defining a secondary chamber, wherein the secondary chamber is filled with a second gas or liquid which is more viscous than the first gas or liquid and wherein the secondary chamber is sized to contain a maximum volume which is less than a maximum combined volume of the central chamber and the peripheral chamber; and

second guides formed on the third layer, wherein the second guides start from a first non-edge position on the third layer and end at a second non-edge position on the third layer, and wherein the second guides are located within a periphery formed by the first guides.

13. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 12 wherein the first guides define corners having gaps therebetween.

14. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 12 wherein the central chamber and the peripheral chamber are in fluid communication with one another via one or more passageways.

15. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 12 further comprising a foam layer positioned adjacent to the second layer.

16. The multi-layer cushion support of claim 12 wherein the second guides are spaced from each other and from peripheral edges of the secondary chamber.
