Abstract

According to one or more embodiments of the disclosure, a first tunnel router may receive a reservation request to establish a deterministic path between a first node and a second node. The first tunnel router may determine, based on the reservation request, a destination address of the second node. The first tunnel router may identify, based on the destination address of the second node, a second tunnel router associated with the second node. The first tunnel router may encapsulate a deterministic packet sent by the first towards the second node into a tunnel packet, wherein a multicast address in a header of the tunnel packet is set to the destination address of the second node. The first tunnel router can forward the tunnel packet along the deterministic path. The multicast address in the header of the tunnel packet causes nodes to send the tunnel packet according to the deterministic path.

Claims (34)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a first tunnel router, a reservation request to establish a deterministic path between a first node and a second node, the deterministic path having deterministic properties according to the group consisting of IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and audio video bridging (AVB), wherein the deterministic properties include bandwidth reservation, bounded and limited latency, and time synchronization;

determining, by the first tunnel router and based on the reservation request, a destination address of the second node;

identifying, by the first tunnel router and based on the destination address of the second node, a second tunnel router associated with the second node, wherein there is a plurality of nodes between the first tunnel router and the second tunnel router;

encapsulating, by the first tunnel router, a deterministic packet sent by the first node towards the second node into a tunnel packet, wherein a multicast address in a header of the tunnel packet is set to the destination address of the second node, further wherein the multicast address in the header of the tunnel packet causes the plurality of nodes between the first tunnel router and the second tunnel router to send the tunnel packet according to the deterministic path; and

forwarding, by the first tunnel router and to the second tunnel router via a tunnel, the tunnel packet along the deterministic path.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of nodes between the first tunnel router and the second tunnel router comprise a relay tunnel router located at an edge of a layer-2 (L2) domain.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the multicast address in the header of the tunnel packet is a media access control (MAC) address.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reservation request comprises a multiple stream reservation protocol (MSRP) request.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining, by the first tunnel router and based on the reservation request, the destination address of the second node comprises determining, by the first tunnel router, the destination address of the second node via a control plane protocol.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the control plane protocol is selected from the group consisting of a locator/identifier separation protocol (LISP) and a border gateway protocol (BGP).

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tunnel is selected from the group consisting of: a virtual extensible local area network (VxLAN) tunnel and a generic routing encapsulation (GRE) tunnel.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tunnel connects distinct layer-2 (L2) domains via a layer-3 (L3) network.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the tunnel traverses a plurality of routing segments, and wherein the plurality of nodes along the tunnel between the first tunnel router and the second tunnel router are aware of the deterministic path but are unaware of the of routing segments.

10. An apparatus, comprising:

one or more network interfaces to communicate with a network;

a processor coupled to the network interfaces and configured to execute one or more processes; and

a memory configured to store a process executable by the processor, the process when executed operable to:

receive a reservation request to establish a deterministic path between a first node and a second node, the deterministic path having deterministic properties according to the group consisting of IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and audio video bridging (AVB), wherein the deterministic properties include bandwidth reservation, bounded and limited latency, and time synchronization;

determine, based on the reservation request, a destination address of the second node;

identify, based on the destination address of the second node, a tunnel router associated with the second node, wherein there is a plurality of nodes between the apparatus and the tunnel router;

encapsulate a deterministic packet sent by the first node towards the second node into a tunnel packet, wherein a multicast address in a header of the tunnel packet is set to the destination address of the second node, further wherein the multicast address in the header of the tunnel packet causes the plurality of nodes between the apparatus and the tunnel router to send the tunnel packet according to the deterministic path; and

forward, to the tunnel router via a tunnel, the tunnel packet along the deterministic path.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of nodes between the apparatus and the tunnel router comprise a relay tunnel router located at an edge of a layer-2 (L2) domain.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the multicast address in the header of the tunnel packet is a media access control (MAC) address.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the tunnel connects distinct layer-2 (L2) domains via a layer-3 (L3) network.

14. A tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium storing program instructions that cause a device in a network to execute a process comprising:

receiving a reservation request to establish a deterministic path between a first node and a second node, the deterministic path having deterministic properties according to the group consisting of IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and audio video bridging (AVB), wherein the deterministic properties include bandwidth reservation, bounded and limited latency, and time synchronization;

determining, based on the reservation request, a destination address of the second node;

identifying, based on the destination address of the second node, a tunnel router associated with the second node, wherein there is a plurality of nodes between the device and the tunnel router;

encapsulating a deterministic packet sent by the first node towards the second node into a tunnel packet, wherein a multicast address in a header of the tunnel packet is set to the destination address of the second node, further wherein the multicast address in the header of the tunnel packet causes the plurality of nodes between the device and the tunnel router to send the tunnel packet according to the deterministic path; and

forwarding, to the tunnel router via a tunnel, the tunnel packet along the deterministic path.

15. The computer-readable medium as in claim 14 , wherein the plurality of nodes comprise a relay tunnel router located at an edge of a layer-2 (L2) domain.
