Abstract

An apparatus for evaluating the tongue strength and coordination of a subject includes an intermediate device such as a lever which is pivotably attached to a coupling device and extends into a cavity of a nipple element. The lever is detached from the nipple and pivotable in response to deformation of the nipple element by a tongue force exerted on the nipple element by a subject during a suck-swallow-breathe sequence. The coupling device includes a sensing device to wirelessly transmit sensor outputs to a mobile device paired to the sensing device. The sensing device includes at least one sealed chamber defined by a membrane and a sensor. In one example, a first membrane and sensor senses pressure change in a fluid in the apparatus, and a second membrane and sensor is actuated by the intermediate device to sense deformation of the nipple element. A method using the apparatus is provided.

Claims (78)

1. An evaluation system comprising:

a non-nutritive suck (NNS) nipple comprising:

a nipple wall forming a tip portion and a base portion;

a nipple cavity defined by the nipple wall;

a flange including an opening to the nipple cavity;

wherein the base portion is intermediate the tip portion and the flange;

wherein the flange is configured for joining the no-flow nipple to a nipple collar; and

wherein the tip portion is enclosed such that none of a fluid contained in the nipple cavity can flow directly from the nipple cavity through the nipple wall of the tip portion;

a nutritive suck (NS) nipple comprising:

a second NNS nipple further including an aperture formed in the tip portion of the second NNS nipple such that fluid contained in the nipple cavity can flow directly from the nipple cavity through the nipple wall of the tip portion through the aperture.

2. The evaluation system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of NNS nipples including at least a first nipple and a second nipple;

wherein:

the first nipple is characterized by a first effective compliance;

the second nipple is characterized by a second effective compliance; and

wherein the first effective compliance is different from the second effective compliance.

3. The evaluation system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a coupling device at least partially disposed within the nipple cavity; and

wherein the coupling device is operable to output a measurement of a movement exerted on the nipple wall.

4. The evaluation system of claim 3 , further comprising:

the nipple collar;

wherein the coupling device comprises:

a coupling body having a proximal end and a distal end;

wherein the coupling body includes a passage extending from the proximal end to the distal end;

wherein the coupling body is joined to the flange by the nipple collar such that the passage is in fluid communication with the nipple cavity.

5. The evaluation system of claim 4 , further comprising

a lever including a lever end;

wherein the lever is positioned in the passage and pivotably connected to the coupling body;

wherein the lever end protrudes from the passage at the distal end of the coupling body; and

wherein the coupling body is joined to the flange by the nipple collar such that the lever end is disposed within the nipple cavity.

6. The evaluation system of claim 5 , wherein the coupling device comprises:

a device wall;

wherein the passage is defined by the device wall;

a sensor plug disposed in the device wall intermediate the proximal and distal ends;

the lever including an actuator;

wherein the lever is pivotably attached to the device wall such that deflection of the lever end causes the actuator to exert an actuation force on the sensor plug.

7. The evaluation system of claim 6 , further comprising:

the sensor plug including a frame portion and a membrane disposed in the frame portion;

wherein the membrane is movable relative to the frame portion such that a movement of the membrane is generated in response to the actuation force;

a sensor operable to sense the movement of the membrane;

wherein the sensor plug is intermediate the sensor and the passage;

wherein the sensor is configured to generate a sensor output corresponding to the movement of the membrane.

8. An evaluation system comprising:

a nipple comprising:

a nipple wall forming a tip portion and a base portion;

a nipple cavity defined by the nipple wall;

a flange including an opening to the nipple cavity;

wherein the base portion is intermediate the tip portion and the flange;

a coupling device at least partially disposed within the nipple cavity;

wherein the coupling device is operable to output a measurement of a movement exerted on the nipple wall;

wherein the coupling device comprises:

a coupling body having a proximal end and a distal end;

wherein the coupling body includes a passage extending from the proximal end to the distal end;

wherein the coupling body is joined to the flange such that the passage is in fluid communication with the nipple cavity;

wherein the coupling body includes a wall defining the passage;

wherein the coupling device comprises:

an opening defined by the wall;

a sensor plug disposed in the opening; and

wherein the opening is intermediate the proximal and distal ends;

the sensor plug including a frame portion and a membrane disposed in the frame portion; and

wherein the membrane is movable relative to the frame portion.

9. The evaluation system of claim 8 , wherein:

the coupling device further comprises:

a housing; and

a sensor entirely contained in the housing;

wherein the housing is positioned relative to the sensor plug such that the housing and the sensor plug define a chamber;

wherein the sensor is in communication with the membrane via the chamber; and

wherein the sensor is configured to sense a movement of the membrane and to generate a sensor output corresponding to a movement of the membrane.

10. The evaluation system of claim 9 , wherein the sensor plug encloses the opening such that the chamber is fluidly separated from the passage by the sensor plug.

11. The evaluation system of claim 10 , wherein:

the housing is attachable to the coupling body;

the housing defining a port element;

wherein the sensor is disposed in the port element; and

wherein, with the housing attached to the coupling body, the port element is in contact with the membrane and the sensor is in communication with the membrane via the port element.

12. The evaluation system of claim 11 , wherein:

the port element, the sensor and the membrane define a sealed chamber;

the sensor is a pressure sensor in communication with the sealed chamber to sense a change in a chamber pressure of the sealed chamber; and

the change in chamber pressure corresponds to the movement of the membrane by an actuator disposed in the passage.
