Abstract

A weight apparatus includes a handle, first and second anchorages mounted to first and second ends of the handle, respectively, the handle and the first and second anchorages having an axially extending opening, first and second rods axially movable inside the axially extending opening and adapted to be moved axially relative to the axially extending opening in opposite directions upon rotation of first and second pinion gears in the first and second anchorages, respectively, that engage with first and second racks on the first and second rods, respectively, and a lock having a locked condition in which rotation of the first and second pinion gears is prevented and an unlocked condition in which rotation of the first and second pinion gears is permitted.

Claims (12)

1. A weight apparatus, comprising:

a bar comprising

a handle,

anchorages rotatably mounted to opposite ends of the handle, the handle and the anchorages having an axially extending opening,

a first rod slidably disposed inside the axially extending opening,

a second rod slidably disposed inside the axially extending opening, and

wherein the first and second rods are configured to move in opposite directions in the axially extending opening upon rotation of the handle relative to the anchorages from a fully retracted position in which at least a first length of the first and second rods overlap in the axially extending opening to a fully extended position in which the first and second rods overlap in the axially extending opening a second length less than the first length.

2. The weight apparatus as set forth in claim 1 , comprising means, disposed in each of the anchorages, for engaging with the first and second rods, and for moving the first and second rods in opposite directions in the axially extending opening upon rotation of the handle relative to the anchorages.

3. The weight apparatus as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the axially extending opening is circular and the first rod and the second rod are both substantially half-circular in cross-section over at least a portion of a length of the first rod and the second rod.

4. The weight apparatus as set forth in claim 3 , wherein the first rod and the second rod are both substantially half-circular in cross-section over at least the first length of the first and second rods.

5. The weight apparatus as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the axially extending opening has a cross-sectional shape, and the first rod and the second rod have cross-sections over at least the first length of the first and second rods such that the first and second rods substantially form the shape when the first and second rods overlap.

6. The weight apparatus as set forth in claim 1 , comprising an engagement member disposed in each anchorage, each engagement member engaging with an engagement surface of a respective one of the first and second rods, wherein engagement between the engagement member in each anchorage and the respective one of the first and second rods causes the first and second rods to move axially in opposite directions in the axially extending opening upon rotation of the handle relative to the anchorages.
