Eco-friendly materials and methods for renewable and sustainable applications in material chemistry
The invention relates to novel hydrazide-based templates, methods of making the same, and methods of using the hydrazide-based templates as molecular scaffolds for asymmetric light driven transformations, light driven material synthesis, and biological applications. Furthermore, the present invention relates to photoinitiators, monomers, and polymers derived from biomass, together with methods and methods of using the same.
1. A method of making a polymer, the method comprising:
reacting a first monomeric unit with a biomass-derived photoinitiator to yield the polymer, wherein the photoinitiator is derived from hydroxymethylfurfural, vanillin, ortho-vanillin, or iso-vanillin.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator comprises a compound that is in an excited state when irradiated with UV or visible light.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator is of type 1.
4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator has the formula:
wherein one or more of A, B, or C is aryl, alkyl, hetero-cycle, carbocycle, heteroaryl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkyloxy, aryloxy, olefin, alkynyl, or aromatic;
wherein X is COR, where R is aryl, alkyl, hetero-cycle, carbocycle, heteroaryl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkyloxy, aryloxy, olefin, or aromatic.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator is selected from:
6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator is derived from hydroxymethylfurfural.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator is of type 2.
8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator has the formula:
wherein one or more of A, B, C, or D is aryl, alkyl, hetero-cycle, carbocycle, heteroaryl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkyloxy, aryloxy, olefin, aromatic, or alkynyl;
wherein X is aryl, alkyl, hetero-cycle, carbocycle, heteroaryl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkyloxy, aryloxy, olefin, aromatic, or alkynyl.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator has the formula:
wherein R is H, an electron withdrawing group, or an electron donating group.
10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator is derived from vanillin, ortho-vanillin, or iso-vanillin.
11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the reacting further comprises a co-initiator, wherein the co-initiator comprises an amine, an alcohol, a thiol, or a secondary alkane.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the co-initiator is thiophenol.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator is a photoacid.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator has the formula:
wherein one or more of A, B, C, or D is aryl, alkyl, hetero-cycle, carbocycle, heteroaryl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkyloxy, aryloxy, olefin, or aromatic;
wherein X is aryl, alkyl, hetero-cycle, carbocycle, heteroaryl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkyloxy, aryloxy, olefin, aromatic, alkenyl, alkynyl.
15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator is selected from:
16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the biomass-derived photoinitiator is derived from vanillin, ortho-vanillin, or iso-vanillin.
17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reacting comprises exposure to light with a wavelength of from about 300 nm to about 450 nm.
