Abstract

The invention relates to the identification of taste receptors and cells which express these taste receptors which are involved in sweet and umami taste transduction. Also, the invention relates to the use of these taste receptors and cells which express these taste receptors in assays for the identification of taste modulatory compounds.

Claims (22)

1. A method of identifying putative human or non-human primate cells which respond to umami tastants which method comprises identifying human or non-human primate cells which express a polypeptide at least 90% identical to the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 17 in a population of cells and isolating said identified human or non-human primate cells from said population of cells thereby obtaining a subpopulation of cells comprising said identified, isolated human or non-human primate cells which respond to umami tastants.

2. The method of claim 1 which method comprises identifying human or non-human primate cells which express a polypeptide at least 95% identical to the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 17.

3. The method of claim 1 which method comprises identifying human or non-human primate cells which express the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 17.

4. The method of claim 1 , which further determines whether said human or non-human primate cells express a polypeptide at least 90% identical to the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 4.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the method detects the expression of the polypeptide using an antibody.

6. The method of claim 2 wherein the method detects the expression of both polypeptides using an antibody.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the method detects the expression of the polypeptide using one or more nucleic acid probes or primers.

8. The method of claim 4 wherein the method detects the expression of both polypeptides using one or more nucleic acid probes or primers.

9. The method of claim 7 which comprises polymerase chain reaction.

10. The method of claim 8 which comprises polymerase chain reaction.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the method detects for such cells in a cell sample isolated from one or more of the circumvallate or fungiform papillae, geschmackstreifen, oral cavity, gastrointestinal epithelium, and epiglottis.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

13. The method of claim 2 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

14. The method of claim 3 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

15. The method of claim 4 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

16. The method of claim 5 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

17. The method of claim 6 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

18. The method of claim 7 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

19. The method of claim 8 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

20. The method of claim 9 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

21. The method of claim 10 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.

22. The method of claim 11 wherein the identified, isolated cells are human.
