Abstract

A speed control apparatus for an inline pipeline inspection tool includes a body configured to be moved by a compressible product moving through a pipeline and a speed control mechanism supported by the body. The speed control mechanism includes a contact member that is positionable against an inner surface of the pipeline and an actuator configured to act on the contact member to adjust a speed of the body when the speed deviates from a predetermined speed. The speed control apparatus forms a drive system that provides forward propulsion to prevent the tool from slowing or stopping due to a problematic feature in the pipeline. The speed control apparatus also forms a brake system that minimizes overspeed conditions that can occur when built-up pressure initially dislodges the tool from the problematic feature in the pipeline.

Claims (31)

1. A speed control section for an inline pipeline inspection tool,

comprising:

a body configured to be moved by a compressible product moving through a pipeline; and

a speed control mechanism supported by the body, the speed control mechanism including (i) a controller configured to detect a speed of the body, (ii) a contact surface configured to be positioned against an inner surface of the pipeline, (iii) a first actuator configured to act on the contact surface to adjust the speed of the body in response to the controller determining that the speed of the body has deviated from a predetermined range of speeds, and (iv) a second actuator configured to position the contact surface between (a) a first position in which the contact surface is disposed against the inner surface of the pipeline and (b) a second position in which the contact member is spaced from the inner surface of the pipeline, wherein the second actuator is configured to selectively dispose the contact surface against the inner surface of the pipeline in response to the controller detecting that the speed of the body has deviated from the predetermined range of speeds.

2. The speed control section of claim 1 , wherein the contact surface is included on a wheel oriented for rolling contact with the inner surface and, when the speed of the body deviates from the predetermined range, the first actuator is configured to generate a torque on the wheel such that the wheel adjusts the speed of the body towards the predetermined range.

3. The speed control section of claim 2 , wherein:

when the speed of the body is below the predetermined range, the first actuator generates the torque on the wheel in a first direction such that the wheel increases the speed of the body, and

when the speed of the body is above the predetermined range, the first actuator generates the torque on the wheel in a second direction such that the wheel decreases the speed of the body.

4. The speed control section of claim 3 , wherein the first actuator is a rotary electric machine configured to operate in a drive mode in which the machine generates the torque on the wheel in the first direction and a regenerative mode in which the machine generates the torque on the wheel in the second direction.

5. The speed control section of claim 3 , wherein the first actuator includes an electric motor and a brake device, the electric motor configured to generate the torque on the wheel in the first direction and the brake device configured to generate the torque on the wheel in the second direction.

6. The speed control section of claim 1 , wherein:

the contact surface is included on a track mechanism that includes a track and a drive wheel, the track oriented for rolling contact with the inner surface and the drive wheel configured to move the track in a track path, and

when the speed of the body deviates from the predetermined range, the first actuator is configured to generate a torque on the drive wheel such that the track adjusts the speed of the body towards the predetermined range.

7. The speed control section of claim 6 , wherein:

when the speed of the body is below the predetermined range, the first actuator generates the torque on the drive wheel in a first direction such that the track increases the speed of the body, and

when the speed of the body is above the predetermined range, the first actuator generates the torque on the drive wheel in a second direction such that the track decreases the speed of the body.

8. The speed control section of claim 7 , wherein the first actuator is a rotary electric machine configured to operate in a drive mode in which the machine generates the torque on the drive wheel in the first direction and a regenerative mode in which the machine generates the torque on the drive wheel in the second direction.

9. The speed control section of claim 1 , wherein the controller includes a sensor input configured to receive a signal from a speed sensor, and wherein the controller is further configured to detect an acceleration of the body based on the sensor input.

10. The speed control section of claim 9 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine that the speed of the body has deviated from the predetermined range of speeds based on the detected acceleration of the body.

11. A brake section for an inline pipeline inspection tool,

comprising:

a body configured to be moved by a compressible product moving through a pipeline in a flow direction;

a controller supported by the body, the controller including a sensor input, wherein the controller is configured to detect an overspeed condition of the body in which the speed of the body in the flow direction is above a predetermined range of speeds; and

a brake supported by the body, the brake including (i) a contact surface provided by an expandable cup that is supported by the body and configured to be positioned against an inner surface of the pipeline and (ii) an actuator configured to selectively act on the contact surface to decrease a speed of the body in response to detection of the overspeed condition by the controller, wherein the actuator is configured to move the contact surface in a radial direction and selectively position the contact surface in (a) a first position in which the contact surface is disposed against the inner surface of the pipeline in response to detection of the overspeed condition by the controller and (b) a second position in which the contact surface is spaced from the inner surface of the pipeline in response to a condition other than the overspeed condition by the controller.

12. The brake section of claim 11 , further comprising an arm connected at a first end to the body, the arm guiding the contact surface in at least one of an arcuate path and a linear path between the first and second positions.

13. The brake section of claim 11 , further comprising an expandable cup that is supported by the body, the expandable cup having a wall that traverses a space between the body and the inner surface of the pipeline,

wherein the contact surface is at least one of (i) disposed on a portion of the expandable cup that contacts the inner surface and (ii) disposed on the expandable cup between the expandable cup and the inner surface, and

wherein the actuator is configured to apply a radial force on the expandable cup such that the expandable cup expands radially outwardly further against the inner surface and the speed of the body decreases towards the predetermined range.

14. The brake section of claim 13 , wherein the brake includes a linkage disposed between the actuator and the expandable cup, the linkage configured to convert a motion of the actuator in a direction substantially parallel to the flow direction to a radial motion so as to expand the expandable cup.

15. The brake section of claim 11 , wherein the sensor input is configured to receive a signal from a speed sensor, wherein the controller is further configured to detect an acceleration of the body based on the sensor input.

16. The brake section of claim 15 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine that the speed of the body has deviated from the predetermined range of speeds based on the detected acceleration of the body.
