Abstract

An intumescent firestop element is supported within a light can by fire sensitive supports each having a base fabricated of a meltable or flammable material and a supporting element fabricated of metal and supported by the base, with the base joined to the light can. In response to a fire, the fire sensitive supports cease to support the firestop element which drops to a deployed position in the light can until arrested by a limiter.

Claims (27)

1. A downlight fixture comprising:

a light can;

a firestop element supported on or within said light can by at least one fire sensitive support, said firestop element fabricated of a polymer intumescent composition;

each said fire sensitive support having a base fabricated of a meltable or flammable material and a supporting element fabricated of metal and having a lower wall sandwiched between said base and said light can, said supporting element supported by said base, said base joined to said light can;

said at least one fire sensitive support, in response to a fire, ceasing to support said firestop element such that said firestop element is freed to drop to a deployed position; and

said light can further having a limiter to limit a drop of said firestop element.

2. The downlight fixture of claim 1 further comprising a light mount within said light can.

3. The downlight fixture of claim 2 wherein said firestop element is supported by said at least one fire sensitive support within said light can.

4. The downlight fixture of claim 2 wherein said limiter comprises a plurality of cables, each cable joined at one end to an upper end of said light can.

5. The downlight fixture of claim 4 further comprising an enlargement at another end of each said cable opposite said one end.

6. The downlight fixture of claim 5 further comprising a support plate underlying said firestop element, said support plate having a plurality of openings and wherein each said cable extends through an opening of said openings in said support plate, each said enlargement being larger than each said opening.

7. The downlight fixture of claim 6 wherein said firestop element is a disk having a plurality of axial through slots and wherein each said cable extends through one of said axial through slots.

8. The downlight fixture of claim 5 wherein said cables have lengths so as to arrest said firestop element proximate a base of said light can after said drop of said firestop element.

9. The downlight fixture of claim 1 wherein said lower wall of said supporting element has at least one projection abutting said light can so as to resist rotation of said fire sensitive support.

10. The downlight fixture of claim 9 wherein said base has a boss and said lower wall of said supporting element has a through hole receiving said boss and locating said supporting element with respect to said base.

11. The downlight fixture of claim 9 wherein a light can facing wall of said base has a depression receiving said lower wall of said supporting element and locating said supporting element with respect to said base.

12. The downlight fixture of claim 1 wherein a heat sink is supported by said at least one fire sensitive support and wherein said firestop element is supported by said heat sink.

13. The downlight fixture of claim 12 wherein said supporting element has a C-shaped end.

14. The fixture of claim 13 further comprising a two-legged spring clip joined to said heat sink and wherein legs of said spring clip are received by said C-shaped end of said supporting element.

15. The fixture of claim 1 wherein said polymer intumescent composition comprises a polymer and a blowing agent.

16. A fire sensitive support for use in a downlight comprising:

a base fabricated of a meltable or flammable material;

a supporting element fabricated of metal, said supporting element having a lower wall extending along a rear wall of said base, said lower wall having a projection projecting rearwardly from said base;

said base having a feature locating said supporting element with respect to said base.

17. The fire sensitive support of claim 16 wherein said feature is a boss extending from said base and wherein said supporting element has an opening receiving said boss.

18. The fire sensitive support of claim 16 wherein feature is a depression within said rear wall of said base receiving said lower wall and locating said supporting element with respect to said base.

19. The fire sensitive support of claim 18 wherein said supporting element has a C-shaped end.
