Implementation of a low-cost breathing support device
View Patent ↗In this disclosure, a breathing support system is presented which automates and regulates the use of a bag valve mask (commonly known as an ambu bag). The system can use mechanical actuators, sensors and a smart feedback control mechanism to automate and regulate the operation of the ambu bag to implement core functions of mechanical ventilation for life-saving applications. The system can also be used to provide better breathing support to newborns (e.g. to prevent hypoxia).
1. A breathing support device comprising:
a device control unit that receives information from a sensing unit and desired breathing parameters from medical practitioners and generates signals to control a mechanical actuation unit;
wherein the mechanical actuation unit comprises a pair of jaws that are moved by an electrical motor through a gear assembly comprising of two rotary meshing gears to move a gas volume generator to generate a desired breathing pattern, wherein each rotary meshing gear is attached to a respective one of the pair of jaws by a rod:
wherein the gas volume generator stores air, oxygen or their mixture for current breathing cycle;
wherein the sensing unit comprises gas flow and pressure sensors to ensure safe and effective operation of the breathing cycle;
a power management unit to power the device using either an alternating current source or direct current source; and
a user-interface unit to get the desired breathing parameters from medical practitioners and to display device status.
2. The breathing support device of claim 1 , wherein the device control unit comprises a microcontroller to process signals from the gas flow and pressure sensors and to generate the signals to control the mechanical actuation unit.
3. The breathing support device of claim 1 , wherein the pair of jaws of the mechanical actuation unit are rounded and wherein the gear assembly of the mechanical actuation unit consists of said two rotary meshing gears.
4. The breathing support device of claim 1 that supports a respiratory rate of 0 to 100 breaths per minute.
5. The breathing support device of claim 1 , wherein the gas volume generator comprises a bag valve mask to provide suitable gas for breathing support.
6. The breathing support device of claim 1 , wherein the gas volume generator can support gas volumes from 1 milli-liters to 2000 milli-liters.
7. The breathing support device of claim 1 , wherein the gas flow and pressure sensors are configured to determine the flow rate, gas volume, and pressure during device operation.
8. The breathing support device of claim 1 , wherein the power management unit comprises an uninterruptable power supply that uses the alternating current source, a battery-based back-up power supply, and a switching circuit.
