Abstract

A request for navigation directions for travelling from a source location to a destination location is received. Using data that was stored in a memory of a computing device prior to the request, first navigation directions for travelling from the source location to the destination location are generated, and a request for navigation directions for travelling from the source location to the destination location is transmitted to an online server. After second navigation directions for travelling from the source to the destination are received, it is determined whether a difference between the first navigation directions and the second navigation directions exceeds a threshold level. When the difference between the first navigation directions and the second directions route does not exceed the threshold level, the second navigation directions are merged into the first navigation directions.

Claims (44)

1. A method in a computing device for notifying users of upcoming loss of offline data coverage when navigating the user along an offline route, the method comprising:

receiving a request for navigation directions for travelling from a source location to a destination location;

generating, using one or more processors, navigation directions for travelling from the source location to the destination using data that was stored in a memory of the computing device prior to the request, the navigation directions defining an offline navigation route;

determining, during navigation along the offline navigation route, using one or more processors, that the offline navigation route traverses an area of at least a certain size, for which the memory of the computing device stores no offline data or only limited data related to places disposed along the navigation route; and

in response to determining that the computing device traveling along the offline navigation route is within a certain threshold distance of a boundary of the area, automatically providing a notification related to generating alternate routes or return routes within the area via a user interface of the computing device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising automatically suggesting a specific category of businesses to search prior to reaching the area, via the user interface.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

receiving a selection of the specific category of businesses to search prior to reaching the area;

presenting indications of places within the specific category; and

in response to receiving a selection of one of the places, adding the selected place to the offline navigation route as an interim destination.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting, via the user interface, the navigation directions defining the offline navigation route along with an indication that the computing device cannot generate alternate routes or return routes if the computing device deviates from the offline navigation route in the area.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting, via the user interface, a visualization of the area for which the memory of the computing device stores no offline data or only limited data relative to other areas for which the memory of the computing device stores offline data.

The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the offline navigation route traverses an area of at least a certain size, for which the memory of the computing device stores no offline data or only limited data related to places disposed along the navigation route includes determining the offline navigation route traverses an area for which the memory of the computing device stores low-resolution map data.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising in response to determining that the computing device is within the area, presenting, via the user interface, the navigation directions defining the offline navigation route along with an indication that the computing device stores no offline data or only limited data for the area.

8. A computing device comprising:

one or more processors,

a user interface; and

a non-transitory computer-readable memory storing instructions executable by the one or more processors configured to cause the computing device to:

receive a request for navigation directions for travelling from a source location to a destination location;

generate navigation directions for travelling from the source location to the destination using data that was stored in the memory prior to the request, the navigation directions defining an offline navigation route;

determine, during navigation along the offline navigation route, that the offline navigation route traverses an area of at least a certain size, for which the memory stores no offline data or only limited data related to places disposed along the navigation route; and

in response to determining that the computing device traveling along the navigation route is within a certain threshold distance of a boundary of the area, automatically provide a notification related to generating alternate routes or return routes within the area via the user interface.

9. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions are further configured to cause the computing device to automatically suggest a specific category of businesses to search prior to reaching the area, via the user interface.

10. The computing device of claim 9 , wherein the instructions are further configured to cause the computing device to:

receive a selection of the specific category of businesses to search prior to reaching the area;

present indications of places within the specific category; and

in response to receiving a selection of one of the places, add the selected place to the offline navigation route as an interim destination.

11. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions are further configured to cause the computing device to:

present, via the user interface, a visualization of the area for which the memory stores no offline data or only limited data relative to other areas for which the memory stores offline data.

12. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the area for which the memory stores no offline data or only limited data includes an area for which the memory of the computing device stores low-resolution map data.

13. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions are further configured to cause the computing device to:

in response to determining that the computing device is within the area, present, via the user interface, the navigation directions defining the offline navigation route along with an indication that the computing device stores no offline data or only limited data for the area.

14. A non-transitory computer-readable memory storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors in a computing device, cause the one or more processors to:

receive a request for navigation directions for travelling from a source location to a destination location;

generate navigation directions for travelling from the source location to the destination using data that was stored in the memory prior to the request, the navigation directions defining an offline navigation route;

determine during navigation along the offline navigation route, that the offline navigation route traverses an area of at least a certain size, for which the memory stores no offline data or only limited data related to places disposed along the navigation route; and

in response to determining that the computing device traveling along the offline navigation route is within a certain threshold distance of a boundary of the area, automatically provide a notification related to generating alternate routes or return routes within the area via a user interface of the computing device.

15. The computer-readable memory of claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to automatically suggest a specific category of businesses to search prior to reaching the area, via the user interface.

16. The computer-readable memory of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to receive a selection of the specific category of businesses to search prior to reaching the area;

present indications of places within the specific category; and

in response to receiving a selection of one of the places, add the selected place to the offline navigation route as an interim destination.

The computer-readable memory of claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to present, via the user interface, a visualization of the area for which the memory stores no offline data or only limited data relative to other areas for which the memory stores offline data.

18. The computer-readable memory of claim 14 , wherein the area for which the memory stores no offline data or only limited data includes an area for which the memory of the computing device stores low-resolution map data.
