Abstract

An electronic device for long-term adhesion to a mammal includes a housing with an electronic component. The electronic device may include a first wing and a second wing, each being integrally formed with the housing. An electrode is positioned on a bottom surface of each of the wings, the electrodes electrically connected to the electronic component. An adhesive layer is provided for adhesion to a surface of the mammal. The adhesive layer may cover a portion of the bottom surfaces of the wings but generally does not cover the electrode or a bottom surface of the housing. A method of applying an electronic device to a mammal includes removing first and second adhesive covers from first and second wings of the electronic device to expose an electrode and an adhesive coated on a bottom surface of each wing.

Claims (30)

1. An electronic device for long-term adhesion to a mammal, the device comprising:

a physiologic data collection circuit contained within a housing, the housing comprising a first material;

a plurality of wings extending laterally from the housing each wing comprising an electrode positioned on a bottom surface of the wing, each electrode electrically connected to the physiologic data collection circuit;

an adhesive layer positioned on the bottom surface of each wing; and

an electrical barrier positioned on a bottom surface of the housing and configured to protect the electrodes from shortage, the electrical barrier comprising a second material.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electrical barrier is non-conductive.

3. The electronic device of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of electrical barriers.

4. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer does not extend beneath the housing.

5. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer comprises a hydrocolloid adhesive.

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer comprises a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

7. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein each wing further comprises a flap.

8. The electronic device of claim 7 , wherein the flaps extend at least partially below the housing.

9. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electrical barrier comprises a depth extending in a vertical direction below the housing.

10. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electrical barrier extends continuously along the bottom surface of the housing from a first edge of the housing to a second edge of the housing.

11. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electrical barrier is configured to protect the electrodes from shortage when the skin of the mammal beneath the housing is wet.

12. The electronic device of claim 11 , wherein the electrical barrier is configured to protect the electrodes from shortage when the housing is pressed against the skin of the mammal.

13. An electronic device for long-term adhesion to a mammal, the device comprising:

a housing;

a physiologic data collection circuit contained in the housing;

two wings extending laterally from the housing;

each wing comprising an electrode positioned on a bottom surface of the wing, each electrode electrically connected to the physiologic data collection circuit;

each wing comprising an adhesive element positioned on the bottom surface of the wing, wherein each adhesive element provides adhesion to the skin of the mammal; and

each wing comprising an adhesive strip positioned over and adhered to the wing, each adhesive strip extending outward beyond the boundary of each wing and configured to protect the adhesive element.

14. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the adhesive elements and the adhesive strips comprise the same type of adhesive.

15. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the adhesive elements and the adhesive strips comprise different types of adhesives.

16. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the adhesive strips are configured to increase the total surface area of the electronic device that is adhered directly to the mammal.

17. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the adhesive strips are configured to limit the application of stress to the adhesive elements during movement of the mammal.

18. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein each wing further comprises a flap.

19. The electronic device of claim 18 , wherein the flaps extend at least partially below the housing.

20. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the adhesive strips are thinner than the wings.
