Abstract

Systems for monitoring left atrial pressure using implantable cardiac monitoring devices and, more specifically, to a left atrial pressure sensor implanted through a septal wall are presented herein.

Claims (29)

1. A method of retrieving a wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device extending through a septal wall into a left atrium of a patient, the method comprising:

advancing a catheter situated within a sheath into a right atrium of the patient;

retracting the sheath to expose a tether of the catheter that is unattached to the device;

securing the tether to anchoring elements of the device that are in a deployed state;

applying traction to the anchoring elements using the tether to deform the anchoring elements and withdraw the device through a passage in the septal wall from the left atrium into the right atrium;

situating the device within the sheath; and

retracting the catheter, sheath, and device from the patient.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein situating the device within the sheath comprises applying countertraction to the device using the sheath.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein situating the device within the sheath comprises compressing the anchoring elements to a folded, undeployed state to fit the anchoring elements within a lumen of the sheath.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein situating the device within the sheath comprises applying first countertraction to the sheath to compress a first anchoring element of the anchoring elements to the folded, undeployed state.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein situating the device within the sheath further comprises applying second countertraction to the sheath to compress a second anchoring element of the anchoring elements to the folded, undeployed state.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first anchoring element is a proximal anchoring element and the second anchoring element is a distal anchoring element.

7. The method of claim 3 , wherein when the device is situated within the sheath after compressing the anchoring elements to the folded, undeployed state, at least one anchoring element of the anchoring elements extends in a proximal direction within the lumen.

8. The method of claim 3 , wherein when the device is situated within the sheath after compressing the anchoring elements to the folded, undeployed state, at least one anchoring element of the anchoring elements extends in a distal direction within the lumen.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the anchoring elements is biased towards the deployed state.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the anchoring elements are disposed in the right atrium when the device extends through the septal wall.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tether includes a distal end formed in a snare loop.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the securing the tether to the anchoring elements of the device includes snagging the snare loop around respective free ends of the anchoring elements.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anchoring elements include a first anchoring element and a second anchoring element, the first and second anchoring elements project in opposite directions relative to one another from a proximal end of the device when in the deployed state, wherein applying traction to the anchoring elements using the tether to deform the anchoring elements comprises pulling respective free ends of the first and second anchoring elements towards one another via the tether.

14. A method of retrieving a wireless and leadless left atrial pressure (LAP) measurement device from a left atrium of a patient, the method comprising:

advancing a snare catheter situated within a sheath into a right atrium of the patient;

retracting the sheath to expose a snare loop of a tether of the snare catheter;

securing the snare loop around a knob or an extension plug projecting from a proximal portion of the LAP measurement device;

applying traction to the knob or the extension plug using the snare catheter to withdraw the LAP measurement device through a passage in a septal wall from the left atrium;

applying countertraction using the sheath to deform a proximal anchoring element attached to the proximal portion of the LAP measurement device into a folded configuration and to situate the LAP measurement device within the sheath, wherein the proximal anchoring element extends in a proximal direction within a lumen of the sheath after applying the countertraction; and

retracting the snare catheter, the sheath, and the LAP measurement device from the patient.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the anchoring element is one of a plurality of anchoring elements, at least a portion of the plurality of anchoring elements being in a deployed state within the right atrium when the LAP measurement device is disposed through the passage in the septal wall into the atrial septum, the plurality of anchoring elements compressed into an undeployed state when the LAP measurement device is situated within the sheath.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the LAP measurement device includes a distal anchoring element that is deformed by the septal wall in response to applying the traction to the knob or the extension plug using the snare catheter.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein, when the LAP measurement device is situated within the sheath after applying the countertraction, the distal anchoring element extends in a distal direction within the lumen.
