Abstract

A device is disclosed that can pierce and hold tissue and then pass suture through tissue. The device can have a shuttle that can removably attach to a suture and jaws that can be rotatably opened and closed with respect to each other. A method for using the device to repeatedly pass the suture through the tissue without removing the suture or device from the target site is also disclosed.

Claims (40)

1. A suture manipulating device having a device longitudinal axis, the suture manipulating device comprising:

a first jaw having a first jaw tip;

a second jaw having a second jaw tip;

at least one of an opener moveable against a first jaw opener surface that faces toward the device longitudinal axis and a closer moveable against a first jaw closer surface that faces away from the device longitudinal axis; and

a shuttle having a lateral slot,

wherein the shuttle is moveable along the first jaw and along the second jaw, wherein when the shuttle is in a first position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a first shape, wherein when the shuttle is in a second position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a second shape different from the first shape,

wherein the suture manipulating device has an open configuration and a closed configuration,

wherein the first jaw tip is closer to the second jaw tip when the suture manipulating device is in the closed configuration than when the suture manipulating device is in the open configuration,

wherein the first jaw has a first jaw channel,

wherein the second jaw has a second jaw channel,

wherein the first jaw channel extends along an outer surface of the first jaw,

wherein the second jaw channel extends along an outer surface of the second jaw,

wherein the first jaw channel has a first jaw channel longitudinal axis having a straight portion and a curved portion,

wherein the second jaw channel has a second jaw channel longitudinal axis having a straight portion and a curved portion, and

wherein the straight portion of the first jaw channel longitudinal axis and the straight portion of the second jaw channel longitudinal axis are at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the suture manipulating device when the suture manipulating device is in the open configuration.

2. The suture manipulating device of claim 1 , wherein the shuttle has an extension, and wherein the extension is configured to limit movement of the shuttle along the first jaw or the second jaw.

3. The suture manipulating device of claim 1 , wherein when the shuttle is in the first position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a first size, and wherein when the shuttle is in the second position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a second size larger than the first size.

4. The suture manipulating device of claim 3 , wherein the lateral slot is farther from the first jaw tip when the shuttle is in the second position along the first jaw than when the shuttle is in the first position along the first jaw.

5. The suture manipulating device of claim 1 , wherein a width of the lateral slot is smaller when the shuttle is in the first position along the first jaw than when the shuttle is in the second position along the first jaw.

6. The suture manipulating device of claim 5 , wherein the lateral slot is closer to the first jaw tip when the shuttle is in the first position along the first jaw than when the shuttle is in the second position along the first jaw.

7. A suture manipulating device comprising:

a first jaw having a first jaw tip;

a second jaw having a second jaw tip; and

a shuttle having a lateral slot,

wherein the shuttle is moveable along the first jaw and along the second jaw, wherein when the shuttle is in a first position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a first shape, wherein when the shuttle is in a second position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a second shape different from the first shape,

wherein the suture manipulating device has an open configuration and a closed configuration,

wherein the first jaw tip is closer to the second jaw tip when the suture manipulating device is in the closed configuration than when the suture manipulating device is in the open configuration,

wherein when the shuttle is in the first position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a first size, and wherein when the shuttle is in the second position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a second size larger than the first size, and

wherein the lateral slot is farther from the first jaw tip when the shuttle is in the second position along the first jaw than when the shuttle is in the first position along the first jaw.

8. The suture manipulating device of claim 7 , wherein the shuttle has an extension, and wherein the extension is configured to limit movement of the shuttle along the first jaw or the second jaw.

9. A suture manipulating device comprising:

a first jaw having a first jaw tip;

a second jaw having a second jaw tip; and

a shuttle having a lateral slot,

wherein the shuttle is moveable along the first jaw and along the second jaw, wherein when the shuttle is in a first position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a first shape, wherein when the shuttle is in a second position along the first jaw, the lateral slot has a second shape different from the first shape,

wherein the suture manipulating device has an open configuration and a closed configuration,

wherein the first jaw tip is closer to the second jaw tip when the suture manipulating device is in the closed configuration than when the suture manipulating device is in the open configuration,

wherein a width of the lateral slot is smaller when the shuttle is in the first position along the first jaw than when the shuttle is in the second position along the first jaw, and

wherein the lateral slot is closer to the first jaw tip when the shuttle is in the first position along the first jaw than when the shuttle is in the second position along the first jaw.

10. The suture manipulating device of claim 9 , wherein the shuttle has an extension, and wherein the extension is configured to limit movement of the shuttle along the first jaw or the second jaw.
