Abstract

Devices and methods for treating vascular defects, such as, for example, balloon-type aneurysms, are described herein. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes an insertion portion and an expandable implant. The expandable implant is configured to be deployed in an aneurysm and is coupled to the insertion portion. The expandable implant has a first portion and a second portion coupled to the first portion. The expandable implant is movable between a first configuration in which the first portion and the second portion are substantially linearly aligned and a second configuration in which the second portion at least partially overlaps the first portion.

Claims (30)

1. An occlusive device configured to be positioned within an aneurysm, the device comprising:

a coupler;

a mesh having a length, a first end of the length, and a second end of the length opposite the first end, wherein the coupler is disposed at the first end, and wherein the mesh has a preset shape such that, at least when the mesh is in a deployed state, the mesh includes a flattened broad portion comprising a longitudinally flattened tubular braid having a width that tapers in the direction of the first end until terminating at the coupler; and

a coil comprising an elongated member wound around an axis such that the wound elongated member forms a tubular sidewall defining a lumen therethrough, the coil having a length, a first end of the length, and a second end of the length opposite the first end, wherein the first end of the coil is coupled to the first end of the mesh at the coupler.

2. The occlusive device of claim 1 , wherein the mesh is a braid.

3. The occlusive device of claim 1 , wherein the mesh is a braid comprising superelastic materials.

4. The occlusive device of claim 1 , wherein the mesh is a braid, and wherein the braid is formed of a plurality of drawn-filled tube (“DFT”) wires.

5. The occlusive device of claim 4 , wherein the DFT wires comprise a platinum core surrounded by an outer nitinol layer.

6. The occlusive device of claim 1 , further comprising a suture strand, wherein the coil is disposed over at least a portion of the suture strand.

7. The occlusive device of claim 1 , wherein the coil is radiopaque.

8. The occlusive device of claim 1 , wherein the mesh is configured to be positioned across a neck of the aneurysm to cover the neck of the aneurysm and substantially reduce or prevent blood flow into the aneurysm.

9. The occlusive device of claim 1 , wherein the mesh is configured to be positioned across a neck of the aneurysm such that the mesh serves as a scaffold for endothelial cell attachment to promote endothelization of the neck.

10. The occlusive device of claim 1 , wherein the coupler is a radiopaque marker band.

11. The occlusive device of claim 1 , wherein the mesh is a flattened tubular braid.

12. An occlusive device configured to be positioned within an aneurysm, the device comprising:

a first coupler;

a second coupler;

a mesh having a length, a first end of the length, and a second end of the length opposite the first end, wherein the first coupler is disposed at the first end and the second coupler is disposed at the second end, and wherein the mesh has a preset shape such that, at least when the mesh is in a deployed state, the mesh includes a flattened broad portion comprising a longitudinally flattened tubular braid having a width that tapers in the direction of the first end until terminating at the first coupler;

a coil comprising an elongated member wound around an axis such that the wound elongated member forms a tubular sidewall defining a lumen therethrough, the coil having a length, a first end of the length, and a second end of the length opposite the first end, wherein the first end of the coil is coupled to the first end of the mesh at the first coupler; and

a lead-in member coupled to the second end of the mesh at the second coupler.

13. The occlusive device of claim 12 , wherein the mesh is a braid.

14. The occlusive device of claim 12 , wherein the mesh is a braid comprising superelastic materials.

15. The occlusive device of claim 12 , wherein the mesh is a braid, and wherein the braid is formed of a plurality of drawn-filled tube (“DFT”) wires.

16. The occlusive device of claim 15 , wherein the DFT wires comprise a platinum core surrounded by an outer nitinol layer.

17. The occlusive device of claim 12 , further comprising a suture strand, wherein the coil is disposed over at least a portion of the suture strand.

18. The occlusive device of claim 12 , wherein the coil is radiopaque.

19. The occlusive device of claim 12 , wherein the mesh is configured to be positioned across a neck of the aneurysm to cover the neck of the aneurysm and substantially reduce or prevent blood flow into the aneurysm.

20. The occlusive device of claim 12 , wherein the mesh is configured to be positioned across a neck of the aneurysm such that the mesh serves as a scaffold for endothelial cell attachment to promote endothelization of the neck.

21. The occlusive device of claim 12 , wherein the first coupler is a first marker band and the second coupler is a second marker band.

22. The occlusive device of claim 12 , wherein the mesh is a flattened tubular braid.
