Catheter with high-density mapping electrodes
High-density mapping catheters with an array of mapping electrodes are disclosed. These catheters can be used for diagnosing and treating cardiac arrhythmias, for example. The catheters are adapted to contact tissue and comprise a flexible framework including the electrode array. The array of electrodes may be formed from a plurality of columns of longitudinally-aligned and rows of laterally-aligned electrodes.
1. A basket catheter comprising:
an elongated catheter shaft including a proximal end and a distal end;
a flexible basket catheter, including a plurality of splines, coupled to the distal end of the catheter shaft and configured to conform to tissue when extended into a deployed configuration;
a plurality of electrodes mounted to the splines, the plurality of electrodes organized into triangular-shaped cliques along each of the splines; and
wherein each of the plurality of splines include a plurality of pads that extend transverse to a length of the splines and are configured to host one or more of the plurality of electrodes, the pads on adjacent splines are longitudinally offset to facilitate interleaving of the pads when the flexible basket catheter is actuated into a contracted configuration.
2. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein each of the splines are configured to nest with adjacent splines when the flexible basket catheter is actuated into a contracted configuration.
3. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein the electrodes are spot electrodes and the splines include flexible electronic circuits that are communicatively and mechanically coupled to the plurality of electrodes.
4. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein the distance between the electrodes in each clique is constant in contracted, deployed, and intermediate configurations of the basket catheter.
5. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein the center-to-center distance between the electrodes in the cliques is between 0.5 and 4 millimeters.
6. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein all the electrodes of a clique are coupled to the same spline, and the electrodes of the clique are configured to collect electrical signals emanating from the tissue in contact with the basket catheter, the electrical signals of the electrical characteristics of the tissue, the electrical characteristics of the tissue being independent of the orientation of the basket catheter relative to the tissue.
7. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein the electrodes of the cliques form a right triangle.
8. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein the electrodes of the cliques form an isosceles triangle with a vertex angle between 30°-140°.
9. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein each of the splines is substantially saw-tooth shaped.
10. The basket catheter of claim 1 , wherein the distance between each electrode of a clique is equal.
