Abstract

The present application discloses a method of using a LED-based solar simulator light source having at least one LED array formed by multiple LED groups of LED assemblies, at least one field flattening device, at least one diffractive element, and at least one optical element configured to condition the broad spectrum light source output signal and direct the light source output signal to a work surface.

Claims (36)

1. A method of reproducing the solar spectrum, comprising:

providing at least one LED-based light source formed from at least one LED array comprising multiple LED groups of LED assemblies;

activating at least one of the LED groups to output at least one output optical signal within a discrete wavelength range;

combining the output optical signals from the multiple LED groups to produce at least one broad spectrum output signal using at least one diffractive element;

selectively varying at least one characteristic of the broad spectrum output signal and directing the broad spectrum output signal to at least one work surface;

illuminating the at least one work surface with at least two alignment light signals outputted by at least two alignment devices positioned on the LED light source, the alignment light signals configured to intersect at an angle; and

adjusting the position of the LED light source until the alignment light signals intersect when the LED light source is located at a desired distance from the work surface.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising selectively varying the power of the at least one output optical signal outputted by the LED groups within each LED array.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising selectively varying the intensity of the at least one output optical signal outputted by the LED groups within each LED array.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising controlling the power of the at least one broad spectrum output signal by actuating at least one wavelength range power control actuator.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising controlling the intensity of the at least one broad spectrum output signal by actuating at least one wavelength range power control actuator.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising controlling the at least one broad spectrum output signal with at least one wavelength spectrum control system.

7. The method of claim 4 further comprising displaying the optical power of the broad spectrum output signal on at least one wavelength power designator.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising varying at least one characteristic of the at least one broad spectrum output signal using at least one microprocessor, the microprocessor in communication with at least one control device, the at least one control device in communication with at least one of the LED groups of LED assemblies.

9. A method of reproducing the spectral characteristics of the sun, comprising:

providing at least one LED-based light source formed from at least one LED array comprising multiple LED groups of LED assemblies;

activating at least one of the LED groups to output at least one output optical signal within a discrete wavelength range;

selectively controlling the output of at least one LED group with at least one control device in communication with the at least one LED-based light source, thereby selectively varying the wavelength spectra of the at least one output optical signal;

illuminating at least one work surface with at least two alignment signals outputted by at least two alignment devices positioned on the at least one LED light source, the at least two alignment light signals configured to intersect at an angle; and

adjusting the position of the at least one LED light source until the at least two alignment light signals intersect when the at least one LED light source is located at a desired distance from the at least one work surface.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the at least one control device communicates with the at least one LED-based light source via at least one conduit.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the at least one control device communicates with the at least one LED-based light source wirelessly.

The method of claim 9 further comprising operating the at least one control device with at least one spectrum control system by selectively varying the power of at least one output optical signal emitted from at least one LED group of at least one LED assembly of the at least one LED array by actuating at least one wavelength range power control actuator;

identifying at least one wavelength of the at least one output optical signal emitted from at least one LED group of the LED assemblies by displaying the at least one wavelength on at least one wavelength power designator; and

displaying the power of the at least one output optical signal emitted from at least one LED group of the LED assembly on at least one wavelength range power indicator.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising displaying the output power of the at least one LED-based light source with at least one information display.

14. The method of claim 9 further comprising powering the at least one control device and the LED groups of the LED assemblies of the at least one LED array with at least one power supply;

controlling the at least one power supply with at least one microprocessor; and

permitting the user to vary at least one current signal delivered to the LED groups based on commands from the at least one microprocessor via at least one LED array control board in communication with at least one of the at least one power supply and at least one LED group.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising permitting the user to vary the current signal delivered to the LED group by the LED control board through at least one user interface.

16. The method of claim 14 further comprising permitting the user to communicate with the at least one microprocessor through at least one external processor.

17. The method of claim 14 further comprising permitting the user to store data on one or more memory devices.

The method of claim 9 further comprising providing at least one spectrum control system in the at least one control device, the at least one spectrum control system permitting the user to actuate at least one wavelength power control actuator, thereby selectively permitting the variation of the intensity of the at least one output optical signal emitted from at least one LED group of LED assemblies of the at least one LED array;

identifying the wavelength of the at least one output optical signal emitted from at least one LED group of the LED assemblies with at least one wavelength power designator;

displaying the output power of the at least one output optical signal emitted from at least one LED group of the LED assemblies on at least one wavelength range power indicator, within at least one wavelength range designated by the wavelength power designator; and

permitting the user to vary the power of the at least one output optical signal emitted from at least one LED group of the LED assemblies by actuating at least one wavelength range actuator within the wavelength range designated by the at least one wavelength power designator as selected by the at least one wavelength power control actuator.
