Abstract

An ablation system including an image database storing a plurality of computed tomography (CT) images of a luminal network and a navigation system enabling, in combination with an endoscope and the CT images, navigation of a locatable guide and an extended working channel to a point of interest. The system further includes one or more fiducial markers, placed in proximity to the point of interest and a percutaneous microwave ablation device for applying energy to the point of interest.

Claims (22)

1. An ablation system, comprising:

a microwave ablation device including:

a feedline including an outer conductor;

a balun operably coupled to the outer conductor of the feedline; and

a temperature sensor directly coupled to the feedline and disposed in proximity to the balun to sense a temperature of a portion of the feedline;

a fluid delivery system configured to operably couple to the microwave ablation device and provide a fluid to the microwave ablation device; and

an energy source configured to operably couple to the microwave ablation device and provide microwave energy to the microwave ablation device.

2. The ablation system according to claim 1 , wherein the fluid delivery system includes a cooling unit configured to operably couple to the microwave ablation device and cool the fluid provided to the microwave ablation device.

3. The ablation system according to claim 1 , wherein the balun is electrically shorted to the outer conductor.

4. The ablation system according to claim 1 , wherein the energy source is configured to provide microwave energy to the microwave ablation device in response to the temperature of the portion of the feedline.

5. The ablation system according to claim 1 , wherein the microwave ablation device further includes an outer tubular member disposed around the feedline and an inner tubular member disposed adjacent the feedline.

6. The ablation system according to claim 5 , wherein the feedline, the inner tubular member, and the outer tubular member are arranged columinally and define a first gap between the feedline and the inner tubular member and a second gap between the inner tubular member and the outer tubular member to enable fluid flow through the microwave ablation device.

7. The ablation system according to claim 6 , further comprising a hub configured to couple the fluid delivery system to the microwave ablation device, wherein the hub includes a first port and a second port, and wherein the first gap is in fluid communication with the first port, and the second gap is in fluid communication with the second port.

8. The ablation system according to claim 7 , wherein the hub comprises a hub cap operably engaged with a distal portion of the hub, the hub cap configured to receive the microwave ablation device.

9. The ablation system according to claim 8 , wherein the hub further includes a hub divider configured to define a first chamber and a second chamber, wherein the first chamber is in fluid communication with the first port and the second chamber is in fluid communication with the second port.

10. The ablation system of claim 1 , further comprising a temperature sensing system operatively coupled to the microwave ablation device and configured to sense a temperature profile of tissue proximate a radiating section of the feedline.

11. The ablation system of claim 10 , wherein the microwave ablation device further includes an outer tubular member disposed around the feedline and an outer tubular member temperature sensor operably coupled to the outer tubular member, the outer tubular member temperature sensor being operatively coupled to the temperature sensing system and configured to sense a temperature of tissue adjacent the outer tubular member or a temperature of the outer tubular member.

12. The ablation system of claim 11 , wherein the energy source is configured to cease application of energy when the sensed temperature of tissue or the sensed temperature of the outer tubular member exceeds a threshold.

13. The ablation system of claim 11 , wherein the temperature sensing system is configured to receive temperature data from the outer tubular member temperature sensor.

14. The ablation system of claim 13 , wherein the temperature data provides feedback to the energy source to control the energy source.

15. The ablation system of claim 13 , wherein the temperature sensing system is configured to compare the received temperature data to a temperature profile stored in a memory for determining whether sufficient energy has been applied to the tissue.

16. The ablation system of claim 15 , wherein the temperature sensing system is configured to store, in the memory, radiation patterns associated with the received temperature data, a duration of energy application, and a power setting of the energy source.
