Abstract

A light box is designed to receive sunlight guided through optical-fibers and to divert it through optics onto a photovoltaic chip which converts sunlight into electrical energy. The optics can be arranged as a prism or a reflective surface. The chip is not integrated with the light box.

Claims (17)

1. A light collection housing adapted to receive light from a plurality of point light sources; the light collection housing having:

at least one light transmissive region adapted to receive light beams from a plurality of point light sources;

securing means for securing the light sources relative to the housing to direct their respective beams through the light transmissive regions into the housing, and

an optical guidance arrangement being such that the beams are guided into overlap at an exit region of the housing to form an illumination zone of substantially uniform intensity distribution.

2. A light collection housing according to claim 1 wherein the optical guidance arrangement comprises an inclined reflecting surface arranged to receive the beams from the point light sources and to reflect them to the illumination zone in overlap.

3. A light collection housing according to claim 2 comprising at least one microstructured diffuser at the illumination zone configured to receive the overlapping beams and adapted to spread the received light with a substantially uniform intensity distribution over an area with a defined geometrical shape.

4. A light collection housing according to claim 2 wherein the optical guidance arrangement comprises a prism providing the reflecting surface.

5. A light collection housing according to claim 2 wherein the optical guidance arrangement comprises an opaque block with a dielectric coating constituting the reflective surface.

6. A light collection housing according to claim 2 wherein the optical guidance arrangement comprises two inclined reflecting surfaces arranged to receive beams from respective sets of point light sources secured at opposite walls of the housing, and to reflect them in overlap to the illumination zone.

7. A light collection housing according to claim 6 wherein there is at least one microstructured diffuser associated with the illumination zone.

8. A light collection housing according to claim 7 comprising a further microstructured diffuser arranged in parallel with the at least one microstructured diffuser in the direction of the beams.

9. A light collection housing according to claim 2 wherein the angle of the inclined reflective surface with respect to the horizontal lower surface of the housing is 30° to 60°, optionally 45°.

10. A light collection housing according to claim 1 wherein the securing means is configured to secure the light sources in one or more arrays.

11. A light collection housing according to claim 1 wherein the light sources are the terminal ends of optical fibers.

12. A light collection housing according to claim 11 wherein the optical-fibers are each terminated with a tip that shapes its beam entering the housing.

13. A light collection housing according to claim 1 wherein the light sources are light-emitting diodes.

14. A light collection housing according to claim 1 comprising a fixture which supports the light collection housing relative to a photovoltaic component wherein the light of uniform intensity and defined geometrical shape exiting the microstructured diffuser is directed at the photovoltaic component of the same geometrical shape.
