Abstract

Systems and methods for printed multifunctional skin are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method of manufacturing a smart device includes providing a structure, placing a sensor over an outer surface of the structure, and placing conductive traces over the outer surface of the structure. The conductive traces electrically connect the sensor to electronics.

Claims (45)

1. A method of instrumenting an aerodynamic structure, comprising:

forming a printed multifunctional skin (pSKIN) by printing at least a sensor, an actuator and a conductive trace over a foil by additive manufacturing;

providing the aerodynamic structure having a first surface exposed to an outside environment; and

adhering the pSKIN to the first surface of the aerodynamic structure.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

applying a protective cover over the pSKIN.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the protective cover comprises:

an adhesive having a first side facing the pSKIN and a second side facing away from the pSKIN; and

a protective foil in contact with the second side of the adhesive.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first surface of the aerodynamic structure has a hole, the method further comprising:

sealing the hole with the pSKIN.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pSKIN is conformable to the first surface.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aerodynamic structure is an element of a pump, a wind turbine, an air fan, a submarine, a ship, an engine, a prosthetics, or an aircraft.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aerodynamic structure is an unmanned vehicle.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is an electric field sensor, an antenna, or a magnetic field sensor.

9. A method of instrumenting an aerodynamic structure, comprising:

printing the aerodynamic structure by additive manufacturing;

forming a first opening in the aerodynamic structure by printing the aerodynamic structure;

placing electronics into the first opening;

forming a second opening in the aerodynamic structure by printing the aerodynamic structure, wherein the second opening is connected with the first opening at one side and with an outer surface of the aerodynamic structure at another side;

printing a conductive trace in the second opening; and

printing at least one sensor at the outer surface of the aerodynamic structure,

wherein the at least one sensor is electrically connected with the electronics in the first opening through the conductive trace.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein placing the electronics into the first opening comprises printing the electronics inside the first opening with a 3D electronics printer, and wherein printing the aerodynamic structure by additive manufacturing comprises printing the aerodynamic structure with a 3D printer.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

printing at least one actuator at the outer surface of the aerodynamic structure with the 3D electronics printer.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one sensor and the at least one actuator are elements of a printed multifunctional skin (pSKIN), the method further comprising:

sealing the second opening at the outer surface of the aerodynamic structure with the pSKIN.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

assembling the aerodynamic structure to an aircraft.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the aerodynamic structure is an element of a pump, a wind turbine, an air fan, a submarine, a ship, an engine, a prosthetics, or an aircraft.
