Abstract

The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for measuring an analyte in a host. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for transcutaneous measurement of glucose in a host.

Claims (27)

1. A sensor system for measuring an analyte concentration in a host comprising:

a transcutaneous analyte sensor configured for insertion into the host's tissue, wherein the transcutaneous analyte sensor comprises an in vivo portion and an ex vivo portion, wherein the transcutaneous analyte sensor is configured to measure the analyte concentration in the host;

a housing configured to be disposed outside of the host's tissue, wherein the housing comprises a plurality of layers and is configured to at least partially house:

the ex vivo portion of the transcutaneous analyte sensor;

a flexible circuit board disposed in a first layer of the plurality of layers;

a processor configured to process sensor data, wherein the sensor data is associated with the analyte concentration, wherein the processor is coupled to the flexible circuit board; and

a flexible battery configured to provide power to at least one of the transcutaneous analyte sensor or the processor, wherein the flexible battery is coupled to the flexible circuit board, wherein the flexible battery is disposed in a second layer of the plurality of layers, wherein the second layer is disposed adjacent to a third layer of the plurality of layers, and wherein the third layer is an adhesive layer.

2. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the flexible circuit board is operatively connected to the transcutaneous analyte sensor.

3. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor system further comprises an antenna configured to radiate or receive a radio frequency transmission.

4. The sensor system of claim 3 , wherein the antenna is disposed in a fourth layer of the plurality of layers.

5. The sensor system of claim 3 , wherein the antenna is disposed in the adhesive layer.

6. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the ex vivo portion of the transcutaneous analyte sensor is coupled to the flexible circuit board via a fourth layer of the plurality of layers.

7. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the plurality of layers are flexible and pivoted into a first position prior to insertion of the transcutaneous analyte sensor into a body of the host.

8. The sensor system of claim 7 , wherein the at least some of the plurality of layers are pivoted into a second position after insertion of the transcutaneous analyte sensor into the body of the host.

9. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of a length or width of the flexible battery is at least 10 times a height of the flexible battery.

10. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor system is configured to be used for a predetermined sensor duration by preventing use of the transcutaneous analyte sensor after expiration of the predetermined sensor duration.

11. The sensor system of claim 1 , further comprising a receiver, wherein the sensor system is configured to be used for a predetermined sensor duration and the receiver is configured to prevent use of the transcutaneous analyte sensor after expiration of the predetermined sensor duration.

12. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein use of the transcutaneous analyte sensor after expiration of a predetermined sensor duration is prevented by rendering the transcutaneous analyte sensor inoperative after expiration of the predetermined sensor duration.

13. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor system has a height between 0.15-0.2 inches.

14. The sensor system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the housing, the flexible circuit board and the flexible battery are disposable.

15. A sensor system configured to measure a glucose concentration of a host comprising:

a transcutaneous electrochemical glucose sensor configured for implantation in the host having an in vivo portion and an ex vivo portion, wherein the transcutaneous electrochemical glucose sensor is configured to measure the glucose concentration of the host; and

a housing configured to be disposed outside of the host, wherein the housing comprises a plurality of layers and is configured to at least partially house:

the ex vivo portion of the transcutaneous electrochemical glucose sensor;

a circuit board disposed in a first layer of the plurality of layers;

a processor configured to process sensor data, wherein the sensor data is associated with the glucose concentration, wherein the processor is coupled to the circuit board; and

a battery configured to provide power to at least one of the transcutaneous electrochemical glucose sensor or the processor, wherein the battery is coupled to the circuit board, wherein the battery is disposed in a second layer of the plurality of layers, wherein the second layer is disposed adjacent to a third layer of the plurality of layers, and wherein the third layer is an adhesive layer.
