Abstract

A utility rack includes a pair of end supports for supporting one or more shelves there between. Each end support includes a first vertical support having one or more cross members mounted thereto and a second vertical support. The cross members may be mounted to one or more cross member mounts of the first vertical support and are configured to be movable relative to the first vertical support between a stored position in which they are disconnected from the second vertical support and are collapsed inwardly towards the first vertical support for storage or transport and an extended position in which free ends of the cross members may be attached to the second vertical support using fasteners.

Claims (36)

1. A utility rack comprising:

a plurality of shelves; and

an end support disposed on each of opposite sides of the plurality of shelves, the end supports being configured to support the shelves, and each end support comprising:

a first vertical support including two or more cross-member attachment mechanisms;

a plurality of cross members, each cross member being permanently affixed to one of the cross-member attachment mechanisms, the plurality of cross members being configured to be rotatable with respect to the first vertical support, and, in a stored position, the plurality of cross members being substantially parallel to the first vertical support; and

a second vertical support including two or more cross member attachment mechanisms, the cross members each being configured to attach to one of the cross member attachment mechanisms of the second vertical support in an installed position, wherein two or more of the plurality of cross members at least partially overlap each other in a direction perpendicular to a plane defined by the first vertical support and the second vertical support, and wherein an internal width of the cross-member attachment mechanisms that receive the cross members is not substantially larger than an external width of a largest cross member of the plurality of cross members.

2. The utility rack according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second vertical supports are constructed to each have a channel, and, in the stored position, at least one of the cross members is disposed at least partially within the channel of the first vertical support.

3. The utility rack according to claim 2 , wherein the cross member attachment mechanisms are brackets that are installed within the channels of the first and second vertical supports, the brackets each comprising a single pair of opposing apertures, and the cross-members being attached to the brackets by a fastener extending through the single pair of opposing apertures.

4. The utility rack according to claim 1 , wherein the cross member attachment mechanisms are brackets that are installed on the first and second vertical supports, the brackets each comprising a single pair of opposing apertures, and wherein the cross members include at least one horizontal support and at least one diagonal support, and the at least one horizontal support and the at least one diagonal support are connected to the same one of the brackets of the first vertical support by a fastener extending through the single pair of opposing apertures.

5. The utility rack according to claim 1 , wherein

the cross member attachment mechanisms are brackets that are installed on the first and second vertical supports, the brackets each comprising a single pair of opposing apertures,

the cross members include an upper horizontal support, a lower horizontal support, and a diagonal cross member,

the diagonal cross member and one of the upper horizontal support and lower horizontal support are connected to the same one of the brackets of the first vertical support by a fastener extending through the single pair of opposing apertures, and

the diagonal cross member and the other of the upper horizontal support and lower horizontal support are connected to the same one of the brackets of the second vertical support by a fastener extending through the single pair of opposing apertures.

6. A method for packaging an end support for a utility rack, the end support having first and second vertical support and a plurality of cross members, the cross members being permanently affixed to the first vertical support via two or more cross member attachment mechanisms and being disconnected from the second vertical support, and the cross members being rotatable with respect to the first vertical support, the method comprising the steps of:

folding the plurality of cross members to a folded position in which the plurality of cross members are substantially parallel with the first vertical support, the plurality of cross members at least partially overlapping one another in a direction perpendicular to a plane defined by the first vertical support and the plurality of cross members wherein an internal width of the cross-member attachment mechanisms that receive the cross members is not substantially larger than an external width of a largest cross member of the plurality of cross members; and

packaging the first and second vertical supports with the plurality of cross members in the folded position for storage and shipping.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the first and second vertical supports each comprise a channel, and at least one of the plurality of cross members are folded at least partially into the channel of the first vertical support in the folded position.

8. The utility rack according to claim 7 , wherein the cross member attachment mechanisms are brackets that are installed within the channels of the first and second vertical supports, the brackets each comprising a single pair of opposing apertures, and the cross-members being attached to the brackets by a fastener extending through the single pair of opposing apertures.

9. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the cross member attachment mechanisms are brackets that comprise a single pair of opposing apertures, the cross members include at least one horizontal support and at least one diagonal support, and the at least one horizontal support and the at least one diagonal support are connected to the same one of the brackets of the first vertical support by a fastener extending through the single pair of opposing apertures.

10. The method according to claim 6 , wherein

the cross member attachment mechanisms are brackets that are installed on the first vertical support, the brackets each comprising a single pair of opposing apertures,

the cross members include an upper horizontal support, a lower horizontal support, and a diagonal cross member, and

the diagonal cross member and one of the upper horizontal support and lower horizontal support are connected to the same one of the brackets of the first vertical support by a fastener extending through the single pair of opposing apertures.

11. A method of assembling a storage rack comprising:

providing an unassembled storage rack comprising a first end support, a second end support and at least one shelf in a package, said first and second end support each comprising a first vertical support having at least two cross members rotatably mounted thereto via first brackets and rotated into a collapsed position in which they extend generally parallel to said first vertical support and a second vertical support comprising second brackets which is disconnected to said first vertical support;

removing said unassembled storage rack from said package;

assembling said first end support by rotating said at least two cross members mounted to the first brackets of said first vertical support thereof away from said first vertical support;

assembling said second end support by connecting free ends of said at least two cross members to the second brackets of said second vertical support; and

utilizing one or more fasteners to connect said at least one shelf to said first and second end supports to cause said at least one shelf to be supported between said first and second end supports,

wherein two or more of the at least two cross members at least partially overlap each other in a direction perpendicular to a plane defined by the assembled first vertical support and the second vertical support, and

wherein an internal width of first and second brackets that receive the cross members is not substantially larger than an external width of a larger cross member of the at least two cross members.

12. The method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said step of connecting said free ends of said cross members comprises pinning said free ends to said second vertical support.

13. The method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said first vertical support comprises three cross members.

14. The method in accordance with claim 13 wherein said three cross members comprise a lower horizontal cross member, an upper horizontal cross member and a diagonal cross member.

15. The method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said one or more fasteners comprise a nut connected to a bolt.
