Abstract

An explosive device is described herein, wherein the explosive device includes a substrate that has a surface, wherein surface energy of a portion of the surface of the substrate has been modified in a vacuum chamber from a first surface energy to a second surface energy. The explosive device additionally includes explosive material that has been deposited on the surface of the substrate in the vacuum chamber by way of physical vapor deposition (PVD), wherein the explosive material is deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate subsequent to the surface energy of the portion of the surface of the substrate being modified from the first surface energy to the second surface energy.

Claims (16)

1. An explosive device comprising:

a substrate that has a surface, wherein surface energy of a portion of the surface of the substrate has been modified in a vacuum chamber from a first surface energy to a second surface energy;

explosive material that has been deposited on the surface of the substrate in the vacuum chamber by way of physical vapor deposition (PVD), wherein the explosive material is deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate subsequent to the surface energy of the portion of the surface of the substrate being modified from the first surface energy to the second surface energy, wherein density of the explosive material deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate and porosity of the explosive material deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate is a function of the second surface energy; and

the explosive device being a portion of an explosive train that comprises an initiator, a booster charge, and a main charge.

2. The explosive device of claim 1 , wherein the first surface energy is lower than the second surface energy.

3. The explosive device of claim 1 , wherein the explosive material is a high explosive.

4. The explosive device of claim 3 , wherein the high explosive is pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN).

5. The explosive device of claim 1 , wherein the surface energy of a second portion of the surface of the substrate has been modified in the vacuum chamber from the first surface energy to a third surface energy, wherein the third surface energy is different from the second surface energy, wherein the explosive material is deposited on the second portion of the surface of the substrate in the vacuum chamber by way of PVD, and further wherein the explosive material is deposited onto the second portion of the surface of the substrate subsequent to the surface energy of the second portion of the surface of the substrate being modified from the first surface energy to the third surface energy.

6. The explosive device of claim 5 , wherein the explosive material deposited onto the portion of the surface of the substrate has a first density and a first porosity, the explosive material deposited onto the second portion of the substrate has a second density and a second porosity, wherein the first density is different from the second density, and further wherein the first porosity is different from the second porosity.

7. The explosive device of claim 1 , wherein the second surface energy has been modified to be between 300 mJ/m2 and 3000 mJ/m2.

8. The explosive device of claim 1 , wherein the surface energy of the portion of the surface of the substrate has been modified in the vacuum chamber from the first surface energy to the second surface energy by way of etching of the portion of the surface of the substrate.

9. The explosive device of claim 1 , wherein the surface energy of the portion of the surface of the substrate has been modified in the vacuum chamber from the first surface energy to the second surface energy by way of deposition of a metallized film on the portion of the surface of the substrate.

10. An explosive device comprising:

a substrate that has a surface, wherein surface energy of a portion of the surface of the substrate has been modified in a vacuum chamber from a first surface energy to a second surface energy;

explosive material that has been deposited on the surface of the substrate in the vacuum chamber by way of physical vapor deposition (PVD), wherein the explosive material is deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate subsequent to the surface energy of the portion of the surface of the substrate being modified from the first surface energy to the second surface energy, wherein density of the explosive material deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate and porosity of the explosive material deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate is a function of the second surface energy; and

the explosive device being a detonating cord.
